Yeah he's the one guy you can say was bigger than the game. Universally loved too, rising above any national bias. He completely changed the game. Traditionally the winger was the smallest and quickest guy on the field. Then he turned up 6'5 and 18 stone and with the speed (could run the 100m in 10 seconds flat I believe) and agility of a winger too. Imagine trying to stop someone with that size and speed running at you. Every other country tried to find someone like him and couldn't. Surprised he was only 40 too as it seemed like he'd been around forever but he was only 20 when he set the world alight at the 1995 World Cup.
I recommend the film Invictus if you haven't seen it. Though the focus is Nelson Mendela and the impact of the 1995 World Cup on South Africa, it gives some good insight into how much the other teams feared Lomu and how South Africa's entire game plan for the final was about stopping him.
