I watched most of the second half after Swansea, it's got nothing on football but the World Cup final's still a great event.

Miscellaneous screaming going on around the neighbourhood, there are a few pockets of Kiwis around here.

Got some corporate hospitality tickets so missed the Arsenal game.
The final was the first and only match i watched and the whole occasion was awesome.
I enjoyed it as i was supporting the Ohrl Blexks, as my Kiwi mate calls them, and can't believe ruggerlites are such a small minority on this Aussie-dominated forum.

Despite usually being one of the top teams it's just not that big anywhere in Australia is it? Cricket must be the big one but for winter codes Victoria would be AFL and New South Wales and Queensland more rugby league I assume. It's only NZ where it's THE sport and noone really cares that much about anything else so they should really be winning it every time.

The World Cup is pretty big news here (lots of people watching it in my area, including me), and it's even bigger news over east.

The really big rugby matches over east are rugby league, though - especially the Queensland vs NSW State of Origin series, which is usually at a world class standard for that code, and obviously the NRL finals series.

On the union side, Super Rugby is a pretty big deal as well. And union's the biggest rugby code here in WA. The Western Force get the prawn sandwich brigade, corporate boxes, fancy expats etc even though real people here couldn't give a shit.

AFL is the biggest sport by a mile in WA.

Yeah I live in the east and for the most part Union is only really for private school boys and army boys. League is far more popular and AFL is top of the roost (particularly in the southern states and southern NSW. Cricket is also pretty popular everywhere and football is becoming more popular all the time.

Speaking of football in Oz, just rrad that Optus have won rights to broadcast EPL here from next season. Really hope that leads to some more flexible viewing/subscription options.

Could be similar to what we have here. Online service and it's $200NZ this season for every game. Was $150 last season but they put it up this season and included Copa America. They got the rights for 3 seasons and this is the 3rd so it will be up for bidding again after this season.

i have a feeling it'll be via fetch tv and theyll make you order an ancillary optus mobile/broadband products to access it. prefer it stayed with foxtel tbh, especially since my internet connection will allow pretty average quality streaming

@[deleted] The new stadium's a 60k seater (I think) out in the airport corridor in Burswood.

They've had a number of different plans over the years from refurbishing Members Equity Stadium (where the Glory play) to refurbishing Subiaco Oval, to rebuilding Subi, to this version of the plan which has become a bit of a Barnett government white elephant. The successful tenderer was Brookfield Multiplex who have won a few different infrastructure and construction deals on Barnett's watch, with sleaze attached.

Anyway, costs are blowing out, but that's standard. Not sure when it's meant to be complete.

Very sad news about Jonah Lomu. The first global superstar, even when the game was amateur and noone has ever dominated rugby in the way he did. Seemed like a really decent guy off the field too. My Mum once got a poster signed by him years ago when he was still playing and he was really nice and chatted to her for ages. For someone so well known for their extreme physical prowess to be struck down by illness is a stark reminder that it could happen to anyone.
