A few threads away on this forum we’re talking about”if winning the CL is the main goal?” and in here we’re dismissing the player who scored more CL goals than any other squad player, and also who played a fabulous game winning assist vs Sporting.

He obviously has limitations, more so apparent in the league, but I think he’s as good of a super sub as you’ll find, and over a season those types of players make huge differences.

I’ll gladly cheer Martinelli subbing on in damn near any game, even if I can accept there’s plenty of games he shouldn’t start.

Asterix Consequence of us sacrificing Martinelli's potential to our tactical approach means he's underrated by top clubs, I think. But he's not an ideal Gordon style winger either, he's not the ideal cut-in merchant, nor is he physically or technically perfect as a second striker type signing. By the same token, some Championship club could probably build its whole game model around what he can do. On another trajectory he'd be thought about like Morgan Rogers, who's overrated ...

Explains why certain players are being offered around, the problem is when you are at Arsenal most places are a step down so players will be reluctant to move

JazzG and surely when we were apparently all in for Vini this still would have been a major issue, what would the plan have been if he had somehow come we'd be in the same position is that why we have these strict valuations then trying to minimise our outlay

This is why trossard needed to go and couldn't be running down his contract - that's wages saved plus a book profit

People are living in delulu land thinking we can spend and not let players ago

The one issue I have is that even if we offered decent wages to youth like nduka and thompson, and the 10m for monga we'd still get the money back - we had hutchison till 17 got 2m for him and then chelsea paid nearly 30m in a year

We're also wasting time keeping the likes of Noni when it's clear he's not upto it - If city don't think a player is upto it they sell - We'll waste another 1-2 years till his stock is down to 0

Kepa, Norgaard, Jesus, Vieira, Noni, Nelson maybe white and martinelli should all be up for sale

Most of our targets just got back from holiday in fact Konsa isn't back till Monday - No point in wasting time before that like Bruno G

There'll be a point in the window where the selling clubs will reach a compromise

That's why you have all of utd, us and liverpool who (utd this season only) are waiting it out

Well, first, Norgaard is already done.. But we actually have to get normal bids for the other players (not this 9 million for Vieira or 35 million for Martinelli nonsense). Noni ain't going anywhere, and most likely neither is Benny. If Napoli would get off their ass and make a bid (any bid) for Jesus, that would be great.. Guarantee we end up keeping 4-5 of those players you mention.

Gunner89 we haven't always cared about the price in other situations and we seem to be stopped from spending big based on those posts.

awooga83 I think both the Monga and Rogers deals show a clear focus on getting tighter on fees. Yes, Vini would have been a mega signing but the merch alone would probably have offset the fee.

It's why as i mentioned all of utd, liverpool and us have not brought much YET

Newcastle's initial price for bruno was 100m, we paid 75m which is still a lot but at least somewhat sane in this market

Unless we're going down the chelsea/spurs/city route of giving clubs what they want which is desperate or backed by unlimited funding....we're sensible

Don Pacifico it's more the claim we need to sell before we can bring in. That would have even been more true for Vini if we'd gone through with it so what was the plan to balance that this summer. We Would have had a similar challenge and if we couldn't surely that would have created a problem for the deal even happening.

Yeah, and when we finally got him on loan for one season, it was potentially the worst loan signing the club ever made. And with some of the scabs we've signed (loan or outright), that's saying something.

I think it was less about his transfer fee, and more about the extraordinary wages we would've had to pay him. Although the image rights would've let him accept a huge salary, but not 600k/week or anything.

I know we have to wait until the window closes, but i also dont like the club waiting until 2 games into the season to conclude their business. 'Ideally', we get them a little earlier to integrate them quicker, but i realize it doesnt always work that way

Liverpool need a winger or 2 at the least, haven't managed anyone, needed a CB too had to get a questionable one on loan

United need a midfielder and left back, haven't managed either

Barcelona have wanted Rodri and Alvarez - haven't got either

Man City, PSG (Oil state funding) Madrid (Stumped up 140m for a kid), Chelsea (Paid a good 20-30m overpay for Morgan), Spurs (Crazy fee's for Tonali, Mateus, 50+m for a cb with 1 year left, 85m for savinho)
