The problem is that the number of fixtures keep going up. We will in all likelihood be involved in the next CWC, but you can only play 11 players at a time, and most managers tend to not want to rotate too often otherwise how else are you going to build relationships, synergy and momentum.

Managers will be forced to rotate more but they're just as likely to be forced changes as they are voluntary - especially if the starters continue to make themselves available for selection and every match is crucial to a title or CL challenge.

I will admit that I am starting to entertain the possibility of Tonali. I still think it is likely a misappropriation of funds to go after a player with a good amount of overlap with Rice, Zubimendi, and Merino. However, watching him play in the last few matches, he's really an awesome player. A double pivot of him and Rice would be incredible with their duel winning and work rate. I feel like we should still use the bulk of our funds to bring in ₂ amazing attackers but if we are able to bring him in, I wouldn't be up in arms.

samthegooner you have the right instinct. If people think the football this year is attritional, wait til a season when premier league players return from a World Cup involving 48 teams. Everyone but Nigerians will be wiped out. Just having bodies will be 80% of the battle

Claudius I think our recruitment this summer was already ahead of that trend, focusing on quality depth knowing that the demands of competing for multiple trophies would likely require at least 20 first team players playing regular minutes.

I like the size of our squad as it stands but think we should be improving upon a few of those players to really continue our momentum. I think we are going to have to make tough decisions on those players though since I don't expect anywhere near the amount of movement this summer as we saw last summer - should be closer to the Euros summer two years ago. Expecting anything more than 3-4 transfers in will likely result in disappointment IMO.

Claudius I would also be interested in moving on one of Trossard/Martinelli but it would be completely contingent on securing a top replacement.

White and Jesus will be hard to sell because of injury issues. Jesus may be worth selling with only a nominal fee or even buying out because the roster slot may be more valuable than the player. White I think is so good when fit - and therefore worth a lot on the market if proven fit - that I would keep him another year to try to re-establish value.

I would personally keep Martinelli unless we got offered crazy money. He's a limited footballer but he's incredibly useful in open games (ie, CL) and as a defensive replacement on the wing.

Trossard for me is up to the player. If he wants to stay on a year-by-year deal he can stay, if he wants to leave he can leave. We're not getting serious money for him given age and only one year remaining on contract.

I think the other big issue IMO is Norgaard's spot. Do we keep him as someone who is happy to be a back up, replace him with someone like Tonali who will play lots of minutes now (so that we really have a 3 man rotation for 2 spots), or replace him with someone like Bouaddi who is for the future?

Finally, I would be interested in seeing if there's a loan for MLS where he would play as a midfielder.

samthegooner apparently we've an option for an extra year on Martinellis contract, not on Trossards. Both are up summer 2027. Interesting to see which way we go. I'd be inclined to keep Martinelli if he is happy because he's younger and I think he fits in better as a back up/rotation player. His ability to come on and add both defensive and counter attacking strength is really useful. Trossard has been great but do we really want to still be playing him on the wing at 32?
