Dom we just signed a lot of players in those days. There are tons of guys who just came and went. The list is endless. Some of them were even considered certain stars. Park, Bendtner, Coquelin, Squillaci, Miyaichi, Silva, Afobe, Yennaris, Merida, Campbell, and Akpom. I could go on.

lorddulaarsenal I’d be fine with everyone bar Rayan and Trincao. We don’t need another right winger and Bournemouth isn’t going to sell Rayan. And I just don’t think Trincao is that good and don’t want to buy more attackers from the Portuguese league.

In the early days it was the Clerfontaine connect, and Balague as well as Wenger's intuition and capacity to develop players, wasn't it? Trouble was that by the Chelsea era many other clubs had caught up on the existence of the rest of the world.

Wenger in his best years (95 - 08) signed either unknowns or young talent like: Vieira, Petit, Anelka, Henry, Ljungberg, Lehmann, Fabregas, Adebayor, Van Persie, Toure, Ramsey. That list doesn’t include risky signings of somewhat established players like Overmars, Pires, Campbell and Sagna. That’s genius and not luck or a special connection with a French football center given the list is very international.

Signing Wreh, Grimandi, Cygan, Richard Wright, etc. were mistakes but even having a hit rate of like 15% for your gamble becoming one of the best in the world at their position is something 99.999% of managers could only dream of.

Wenger had plenty of faults even in his prime, but the guy was one of the GOATs for spotting and gambling on talent.

Dom Fair point but Wenger always had the international mindset and connections that the English managers of his day lacked, almost to a man. That's a big reason why the DoF model has been popularised as he and Ferguson were the two that didn't need one: Wenger because of his connections and mindset, Ferguson because he'd just go and break records by signing Verón and other such established international stars.

Dom I agree and disagree. ‘Gambling’ is exactly what he did and many a times it was not needed. He forego straightforward solution at times to overthinking or ‘gambling’ if you like. That million pound haggle over mark schwarzer being one of them.

What do we think of James Garner as backup/competition for Rice. I saw some stats online and he was the second best CM in the league last season behind Declan Rice. Might be cheaper than Tonali/Mateus who seemed to be our primary targets.

Cannon Signed a new deal last season so don't think he is for sale. If he was they'd price him the same as the others lol.

Morgan Rogers: Replace Trossard as a starter, but keep him as an option for Rogers' flaky moments, plus the Belgian is Uber competitive, you need folks like him in your squad.

Michael Kayode: Athletic, Durable, Young, Premier League proven defender. More than adequate cover for Timber. Lots of room to develop his all round game further. As a special bonus, he'll finally make us a proper threat at long throws in the final third. Let's see what Jover can do with that sort of ammunition/asset. Worth at least 3-5 goals a season I reckon.

Eli Kroupi Jr: I like a young striker who consistently outscores his xG. Anticipation in and around the box is tops, doesn't need much space to get his shot off and his technique is very good. Perfect Jesus replacement. Grab him now while he's affordable.

Sandro Tonali: Twofer - Rice needs rest. Can also cover for Zubinendi.

Solid if not spectacular window and definitely takes us up a notch. Combined with our backroom changes in the physio room to keep the lads fit, this should get us a 90 point season. If we are feeling frisky we can also try for that pacy game breaker on the left wing, but I no longer see that as critical - Rogers can do the job.

Would prefer to get Fernandes or Bouaddi over Tonali (or Anderson if Tonali is going to cost within 30m of him), but that’s just preference and I think Tonali is a good player. I just prefer a younger signing for the Rice backup/partner.

-- this is solid wishlist. Raises the floor more than the ceiling but I’d be very happy with it. Keeps the core of the title winning team intact too

samthegooner I agree on Fernandes. I think he's not far off Tonali and has plenty of room to improve. I certainly wouldn't be upset if we signed Tonali but I do think he's a little overrated on here.

Qwiss Fernandes is a much better passer of the ball than Tonali or Bouaddi. He's not quite Wharton but he's a much more well rounded player who is already Premier League proven at 21. I also loved the responsibility he took on in their big games - thought he was one of, if not the best player on the pitch when we played them at the end of the season. Also love that he has some ball striking in his locker and can punish teams who sit off him. That all being said, I don't think Tonali would be a mistake.

i honestly don't like gambling athletes. if you don't have the discipline to avoid gambling on sports, i don't think you're reliable in a high pressure enviroment. another suspension is in his future.
