I have faith that Mosquera will do well. His iffy moments have been at right back, mainly.

He played a few games last season as CB - including against Bayern and Liverpool away and looked good. We're not going to be signing anyone better than him at an affordable rate.

Even when he played CB during some of those cup games

You simply can't trust a 22 at cb for half a season as a title contender unless he's generational like saliba or adams

Gunner89 fair, yes but that's true of any CB that plays there in Saliba's absence. I'm not arguing there's no drop off in quality.

But Mosquera's also shown a high ceiling and Arteta prefers a right footed CB

I think arteta will get a cb, his priority for defense is like no other

Stones is a good shout on a short term deal.

Ray Odds are that Stones would be even less available than Saliba next season though. Uou can't replace an injured player with one of the most notorious crooks in all of football.

Dom Gonna need a leftback in that case, but I don't think Arteta would play Hincapie with Gabriel for an extended period of time. And Gabriel is suspect too from
an injury POV so we might end up needing an extra central defender anyway. I just think these news made it more urgent.

He played CB a few times last season. I think Arteta will start the season with Mosquera as a starting CB, but I'm expecting him to get dropped with Hincapie stepping in even if it isn't ideal.

There's no ideal solution. Mosquera morphing into a CB as good as Saliba would solve so many issues

We'll get a right back at most if White leaves.

Arteta trusted Mosquera to play against Bayern, Liverpool away, Chelsea away at CB. Even on here everyone was very happy with his performances during the first half of the season till he started playing at right back and looked clumsy against pacy wingers. Recency bias is real here.

Mirth I like Mosquera but there's a big difference between stepping up in an isolated game here and there and being asked to make 35 starts. If we have to play a season with him as a starter we're not winning anything.

Dom do you think Hincapie will play RCB? or would Gabriel?

Seems Hincapie (like Gabriel) favors the left side.

MistaT its probably better to go with a Mosquera - Gabriel combination and also hope Timber can keep fit..thats solid enough , with Hincapie at LB.

Klaus it’s not a full season though. He’s literally covering for the main CB for a few months. Also Mosquera has played two full seasons at Valencia - it’s not his first rodeo.

I honestly don’t think you’re going to get much more from Mavropanos or Stones. If you want better, then you go all out.

5 months from now take it to the christmas period, that's nearly or more than half the season of the pl not to mention CL games and carling cup games

If i harboured ambitions for the 12 position valencia got or a bit higher as a regular than i'd be more than happy to start him for half a season

Mirth We'll see. Mavropanos last season was head and shoulders above most starting centrebacks in the league imo and was voted West Ham's player of the season by a wide margin. It doesn't have to be him, but he's available, good and reportedly cheap, and rumor has it that we were interested before all this happened.

Either way I can't imagine Arteta feels that we have enough defensive strength going into next season. We might just try to pull off a Bruno-like signing in the defence too.

Mirth yeah I don't think Mavrapanos is better. He had some great games last season but he's not consistent enough for us. Mosquera might make the odd mistake too but I don't think Mavrapanos is as good. And Mosq just turned 22, gotta start trusting him some time. I think he's ready

agreed with klaus, if we're depending on mosquera till jan, we're gonna rush back saliba to save our season and run him down again

hincapie and cala can fight it out for lb but i want a serious third option at CB

City have guehi, dias, gvardiol and then khusanov and even khusanov their 4th choice is better than mosquera

Stick White at CB and sub Mosquera. Get a RB in

Our current defensive crop is

Timber - Battling fitness issues and didn't make netherland squad
White - Injured to return to first team in August
Saliba - Out till dec/jan
Gabriel - Looking half fit in the world cup
Hincapie - Only person looking fit
Calafiori - Great player but our most defensively suspect defender and injury prone

Now if you add a 22 year old CB to that till Jan, don't crib when we are not challenging

Gunner89 my point is I don't think Stones, Konsa or Mavropanos changes the list either. I just don't think they're going to show anything more than Mosquera during that run. Don't give me someone just because they're a bit older and discount all the baggage they come with.

Now if you're telling me that we should sign someone like Schlotterbeck then fine - I'm with you - but that also takes a chunk from the transfer fee.

No, listen - I think he's a very good defender but he's not someone that can get on the ball and play out anywhere near the level of our CBs.

Mirth As I said it doesn't have to be him, but it most definitely has to be someone better than Mosquera. Perhaps Schlotterbeck is not a bad shout! We have a level to maintain and that level is champions.
