Havertz versus Gyökeres: who will be our starter?

A lot of the opinion at the time of Gyökeres' signing was that he was signed to compete with Havertz.

Signing a £60m striker who's not a guaranteed starter is pretty normal Champions League contender business these days. Wissa, Ekitike, Woltemade, Šeško, Eze, Solanke etc, all in that ballpark ... it's just the cost of players now. Even Nketiah moved for £35m.

Burnwinter we definitely had bigger plans for Havertz when we signed him. Plans that didn't work out because he's no Declan Rice in midfield, and Rice isn't what we thought he was in midfield either.

Agreed, the club wanted Havertz as an 8. Luckily his performances there were so bad at the start that it didn't take us long to move him forward. But the first half of that season cost us the title in the end woth too many dropped points compared to just the 5 dropped points in the second half.

For what it's worth, Rice is exactly playing the role we (fans) expected him to play. An 8, rather than a 6. Who knows for sure if the club expected Rice to be a 6. I just don't think they did tbh as we had Partey and Jorginho back then and chose to hang on to both.

I always thought the expectation was we'd transition to Rice at 6 as Partey and Jorginho were on the way out, but we may never know.

Seemed we were thinking Rice / Havertz / Ødegaard in midfield with Partey at right back when the season opened, and that lasted no time because it was a shambles.

GooneriC its this for me as well. I like Havertz a lot but Gyokeres edges for me because he's a natural forward. I think he pushes teams back and makes space for everyone else. We;ve changed our attacking play to accommodate Gyokeres and I think its made us better. Kai has been out for a very long time too so in the short-medium term I expect to see a little more of Gyokeres. I really hope we use both heavily and have them fresh as much as possible though. A fresh Kai is better than a tired Gyok and vice versa.

Not exactly sure what you mean by "natural forward", but one of my main criticisms of Gyokeres is that he lacks "instinct" in front of goal. More specifically, his movement off the ball and timing is terrible. He doesn't really know how to get to the ball first, whether it is a cross or a parry. Yesterday, he should have beaten Sanchez to the ball, but he made his run too late (only after Sanchez parried the ball).

Agree with this. A striker with a nose for goal would have been all over that... A step quicker. Which would have got them to ball first.

It's about anticipation. You're primed and ready before the shot is taken and you're following up to hoover up in case of any spills. If you're back on your heels like Gyokeres was and reacting only after the shot is spilled, you stand no chance.
