Yeah, look, we definitely wouldn't do it … but I think it's only because we're a bit uptight.

Think about it. It's not at all loser-ish to relegate Spurs while you're already celebrating the league title. It would be a mega-victory over them going far beyond the usual limits of their humiliation.

Sending our derby rivals to the Championship like executioners and champions rolled into one would go hard. It's like you're thrashing them by an entire division, and not just by a few goals. That's a lot of levels up from getting petty about the pecking order of European qualification.

Anyway … a boy can dream.

Hehe, I can honestly say I don't dream about this scenario. I prefer to inflict the misery ourselves every season and get 6 points in the process. Football is already boring as fuck and it will be more boring without the annual demolition of Spurs to look forward too.

JazzG but you've hit on something there, which is when you're battling for the league, you've got plenty of derbies to worry about. In the wilderness years, the only one that really mattered was the NLD.

Burnwinter I honestly think Rice scoring the penalty in your scenario and us celebrating it would be such good a contrast to Spurs celebrating losing out on CL just to spite us. It'd convey nicely that they're barely an ant beneath our boot.

Right. In the theory the power would reside in the capacity to choose. Then whether or not to relegate those bastards would just be about the vibe on the day.

This also reveals that in football, freedom or the power to choose only appears in the "dead rubber". We'd have to have already won the league to have this choice. It's pretty much a player-oriented structuralism of existential meaning-making in the Premier League, where life is a prison conditioned by the "mute compulsion" of "must win" right up till the organising revolutionary poles of victory or relegation.

If I were an Arsenal player in the scenario, perhaps I'd grasp that putting the Spurs players out of their relegation dogfight misery would in a sense liberate them in the absolute confirmation of their shame.

Burnwinter Beckham, honestly, might not be a genius in the usual sense, but he's got some sort of genius nonetheless. He's parlayed his way to £500m nett worth.

He married Victoria, that was his one genius move. She is a smart lady, if he'd married some page three dolly bird, or even a different Spice Girl, he'd be on one of those podcasts now.

The rivalry can resume with Tottenham after a season or two. I so badly want them to be relegated. I won't give up any success however for that to happen, but Tottenham going down would be fantastic.

For reasons that would bore all of you, I'm going to the Leeds Brentford game, in the away end, next weekend. Given how much shit I get from my Leeds mates about our style of football, I'm looking forward to a veritable feast of total football.

Tbh I wish I'd be your mate in that discussion if I was a Leeds supporter and you'd come at me with "oh, so your club with far far far less resources than the club I support can't in fact even produce better attacking football than us?"

RocktheCasbah they are all the same. My Liverpool supporting mate says he hates us because we "foul the keeper" every corner. Yet Liverpool are it now and all he can muster up is "if you can't beat them join them". He seems to think its our fault when other teams do it too.

RocktheCasbah as you probably know, I'm not a local Londoner kind of Arsenal supporter. I find myself "privileged" to be a supporter of a top team since I'd never choose a team like Leeds (I'd never even heard of them when I chose Arsenal). Because of this, I guess I've just also found it small time to pick on teams with less resources for not being able to do what Arsenal do with their vast resources. It just seems irrational to me. Might be different for people who are actually from London since they have a more organic reason to support the team.

QuincyAbeyie right, but you're assuming I'm picking on Leeds for their style of football. I'm not. I'm simply saying to my Leeds mate, it's not our responsibility to entertain you. I don't think it's Arsenal's responsibility to entertain anyone, not me, not you, not anyone. Especially not opposition fans though.

The only responsibility of the football club, is to win matches. That's it. Anything else is a bonus.

As for picking on a smaller club, if you genuinely hadn't heard of Leeds when you became an Arsenal fan, there lies the peril of mismanagement. They are a massive football cub, the only one in the city of Leeds (did you know I lived there for 6 years?), 40,000 fans in every fortnight in the Championship. They have been European champions, also made the CL semi finals around 2001 and, in my eyes, are 100% a Premier League club. But they've had some shit people in charge over the years.

If anything, I'm actually coming from a place of respect for them.

RocktheCasbah all of these things meant nothing when I was like 12 years old and became an Arsenal supporter. I had barely heard of a single football player except for Thierry Henry.

Sorry if I misinterpreted what you said, which I thought was to have a "gotcha moment" at Leeds not having better attacking football than Arsenal. Like I said, I think Leeds fans should be able to make fun of teams with more resources than them. I don't think I as an Arsenal supporter should be able to say "well you as a club with far lesser resources can't match our attacking football". Punching upwards vs downwards etc.

Edit: although we clearly disagree anyway if you don't think it's the club's responsibility to entertain it's supporters.
