Too many people live by the logic that since we're never favorites to win we're expected to never win. The reality is that if we're for example 20 % to win a single season and that percentage remains constant then we're expected to win at least once after four seasons. So for it to be unrealistic for Sicario to expect a title every once In a while you're basically saying we're not even close to having a decent chance in any seasons.

Sure and something like that is my basic expectation. My understanding has been Sicario has said stuff to the effect of this season being "make or break". That doesn't really align with the reality that we would have a 30% chance of winning the title in an excellent year.

How good a coach is Arteta?

Let's say a fan declares Arteta has to win a major trophy or be sacked.

Arteta's work at Arsenal and the concurrent investment from KSE have been the condition of the world not laughing at that fan's aspirations.

Let's say a fan declares Arsenal's football under Arteta is stolid and defensive, and he's the modern Mourinho.

If the emphasis of Arteta's work on squad foundations limits Arsenal, it's also the reason Arsenal could considering sacking him.

If Arsenal were to sack Arteta and win a major trophy at this stage, Arteta would also be among the authors of that success. Arteta is a big part of the reason we feel Arsenal is overdue a trophy.

For better or worse, Arteta did something very difficult and bullied through a change in Arsenal's culture, giving the club a new identity. We're all the way back to the future with a broad spectrum reconception of "boring, boring Arsenal", and I would love to see Arteta win a few major honours, starting now.

This.. This how i feel at this point. He's take us out of a shit era and brought us back into the top echelon of teams, and brought PRIDE in the club back. We see it everywhere. The Hale End Boys succeeding (either here or at other clubs), we see players forgoing part of their salary for a transfer to the club, we see us beating off the likes of Barca, Real, Liverpool and Man Utd for players (Zubi, Rice, etc). We've built a core (and RETAINED a core) of outstanding younger players that are just coming into their own. We get these players to sign extensions and commit to the club. Do you think they would do that if they did not believe we were right near the top? We are able to sign the (realistic) players that we really want, and everyone at the club has bought into it. From the top to the bottom. We have an identity again, we have status again, we have a manager that knew what it meant to play for Arsenal, and instilled that pride into the players, and got rid of the ones that didnt have it. I love what Arteta has done for the club. And now, with just about all the pieces in place, its time to win something. I want Arteta to lead the team to a major trophy. If he does this, it solidifies him as a top manager and no one can talk about the club anymore.

That's the thing. I respect what he's done for the club and putting us in the position we are in, but I don't love him. Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate him either, but I certainly don't love him. In fact I don't particularly even like him.

USArsenal We're at the point where many that hate Arteta do so out of resentment he hasn't yet given them the reasons they demand to love him. So just put us out of our misery and take us over the top to greatness, Mikel.

RowJimmy I think those players in addition to Trossard will probably move this window. Problem with Trossard is he is 30 years old so he'll be looking for that big payday before he moves and that might make it difficult to get a larger fee. Lokonga I'm not sure what is going on because from what I heard he had a decent loan but just can't seem to shift him. Zinchenko and Nelson are on big salaries which makes it harder to shift them. Zinchenko might just want to run his contract down

I think they'll all move but maybe not on transfers so might have to loan them, clubs will be dragging this out until the last few weeks of the window and can we afford to wait that long and potentially miss out on what we need? If Trossard moves we are defo gonna be short and then need to sign someone.

TambourineMan There might be, there can always be a surprise at the end of the window and maybe we are not wanting to commit on Eze because that surprise move might be in play. It is pure speculation, could be Rodrygo or could even be someone like Xavi Simons....

Also shouldn't forget that we need to get Saka and Saliba contracts sorted, that is more important than any signing we could make.

Burnwinter I'd hate him no matter what trophies he won, I imagine. And I'd probably love him, too. But he's come to represent something about football and the contemporary world that I fundamentally despise, or at least deeply lament, pathetic as that may be.

Coombs One thing to see Arteta as Arsenal's avatar of some joyless and mechanistic trajectory of football, led by and adapting to other didactic football technocrats before him, stamping out creativity and verve, ending the era of fat bastard sui generis geniuses who'd hit a Le Tissier level dead ball to win the local derby before shagging their brother's wives and heading to the pub, this ending provoking a melancholy chorus of old man fan elegies ...

... but I still want to see us win stuff and it's folly to expect we're going to do it without multi-stage pressing, ball-playing defenders, elaborate set pieces, a playbook for beating the press, inverting fullbacks and wingers, and all the modern devices Arteta has made Arsenal's practice ...

... and most of these tactics are no more than good football in the late style and should be appreciated as such if there's a commitment to enjoy the sport in today's format at all.

Big Willie Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate him either, but I certainly don't love him. In fact I don't particularly even like him.

Why is that though?

The man was our club captain, lifted our first trophy for nine years with Thomas Vermaelen. Quit playing when he could no longer be 10/10 every week because that is the standard at Arsenal, or should be. And has, as Burns says, he has resuscitated this club to the point where some here are saying he should go if we don't win something this year. He's an intense guy, he's made unpopular decisions, but he's made us a force domestically and in Europe again. More than that, listen to how he talks about the club, he is a proper Arsenal man.

If he could win the Champions League this season, for me it's not, "yes, you can keep your job"; it's "where would you like your statue sir?"

It's one of those "he's a dickhead, but he's our dickhead" scenarios with Arteta. One thing I keep in mind is that our players very rarely have a bad word to say about him.
