I think you can look it at it two ways. One is, he's been here six months and has done more in his first six months than either Merino, or the season before him, Havertz did. And, actually, most of our good early season form came with him in the side.

However, the other way is Eze is clearly not even second or third choice behind the striker and only played yesterday cos Odegaard wasn't fit enough to start. And then you add in the fact Arteta - equally clearly - doesn't want to play him on the left, despite the fact Trossard hasn't scored a goal since the clocks went back...

It all feels a bit Emile Smith Rowe to me, but even sadder.

Something's a bit wrong with the mood in the dressing room and the way this fella's responding feels connected to it. I don't think it's all down to him to be honest, many senior players have seemed a bit fractious, as if they're sick of the conditions.

I would usually blame the manager. Forget about where he plays positionally, this is on the player. If you make no effort doenst matter if you play LW or number 10. He’s too nonchalant. Basically plays like the midfield version of Berbatov. In a title race you need players that take the game by the scruff of the neck. He doesn’t offer that. He’s not a wartime player. We need players that would die for the shirt especially in the business end.

I just think tactically he is weak.. doesn't seem to know where to stand on the pitch... on the wings, its much more straight forward and less demanding.. so would suit him more.

Our attacking football is shit in the general sense. That's the main reason we look like pissing away another chance of winning the League. Arteta has his way of doing things and it's effective enough to get us this far, but some pretty basic stuff like movement off the ball, passing into space and combining with one-two passes and third-person runs in congested areas around the box is severely lacking with this team. The fact that we don't play that way makes it a lot more difficult for traditional attacking players like Eze and Gyökeres to adapt. Eze isn't helped by the fact that he's used so sparingly. Of course that doesn't absolve him of all blame, he should still do better, but I can sympathize with him at some level.

The game against Brentford there was one occasion where 3 of our players(I think Rice was the main catalyst and the others were Trossard and maybe Odegaard or Hincapie) passed, moved and used the space created by the defenders being moved out of position to create an easy crossing opportunity. Was so out of style for this team. But so effective. Why can't we play like that more often? And not just the wing, central areas as well. Teams with considerably lesser quality players do it all the time.

est that's the thing, we can play like that. We just don't until we need to. In the same way that we often come out of the half-time break (or even start matches) with real intent. I don't understand why we don't play like that more consistently - it feels like a choice.

I think we're all overreacting. He'll come good.

We should all care less about the fee we pay for players. They all pay off over the medium term, especially if we win the league. We could look back at his performance against the scum and say it was worth it. Let's wait until the end to see what happens

It'd be nice if he could put together some real form for the next few months. Definitely helps when there are players close to him, he needs people to play with, loves a one two, last ves first time passes, etc

Not just players around him. Movement. You can't play one-twos if everybody's standing next to their markers.

Gyökeres' first goal wouldn't have happened if Eze didn't make that run either.

We need much more of that from all our players.

Tactics

The way Trossard played today is exactly how we should use Eze i.e starting out wide but constantly drifting in central areas with the LB pushed up wide to provide width. This will see him occupy similar areas as he did for Palace.I think we were all expecting him to be used that way. Starting him out wide and expecting him to hug the touchline is a very poor use of his qualities.

He's a low touch player, it's no big deal if we start him out wide. He can pick his moments to come inside and provide those moments of magic we all know he's capable of. Trossard was red hot in Nov/December, so he couldn't be dropped but that's no longer the case. Therefore, I am hoping to see Eze get a consistent run in the side even when Ode/Havertz are fully fit. Best way to do it is starting him out wide and letting him play like he did for Palace (by drifting inside), with the LB overlapping.

Edit: Thinking about it, Hincapie looks more suited to the overlapping LB role than Cala but the latter will likely be 1st choice again when fully fit, so I am not sure. Anyway, we can use them in pairs: Cala--Trossard or Hincapie--Eze

Tactics This 100%, I always viewed him a LW signing and understand that Trossard's form has limited his minutes there but now that our little Belgian is fading it's time to give Eze a go wide left.

That game early in the season against Forest where we won 3-0, and had Eze wide left and Ode at AM is what I want to see more of. After that game, I was sure that was going to be the template team for the rest of the season but injuries and form disrupted that. It's all set up to go back to that now.

Tactics haven't seen the heat maps but Trossard seemed to spend a lot of time on the right supporting Saka. It didn't happen often but occasionally, this meant Eze drifted to the left in his place or (more frequently) Gyokeres did. I felt there was generally a lot more positional fluidity yesterday, which seemed to have a very positive effect.

Tactics makes a lot of sense. I would like to see Eze, Odegaard, Saka on the field at the same time. Our ability to hold possession and be creative will need a quorum of skilled players on the field at the same time.

Btw, that run from the left hand side late on. Like something from a Messi highlight reel. Left his man in the dust.

I don't think it was just Spurs defence. I think he played his own game instead of trying too hard to fit into the Arsenal style. Dare I say Arteta took the shackles off a bit? I was surprised he started after recent games and I have to credit Arteta for making that call but I get the feeling from watching the game and from Artetas comments after that there is a different approach from Mikel on how to use Eze. Maybe in those poor performances Arteta seen something and made the change for this game because of it.

Burnwinter yeah basically said he's figuring out how to use him and that Eze was upset with him for not playing him. Seems they had positive communication on it which is good to hear.
