You're not wrong but in this game, given how we were playing, option 2 was exactly what we needed. We still weren't great but we looked better for my money.

But that doesn’t necessarily form a better attack. A different attack, sure, with different pros and cons. Players running back help the team move up by the pitch by supporting possession. Players running towards goal offer a target to create a chance but that requires players who can exploit the runs, otherwise you’re without a focal point who can help keep the ball.

This match is irrelevant in the scheme of things, we never got going. It's not like the ball was dropped anywhere near Gyökeres more than once or twice during the hour he was on.

Sesko got I think 6 touches in the box in 15 minutes. It just feels like we never bring the ball in the box, someone will always fuck up the pass before we get there

HomeSteak what that shows and I thought was really noticeable yesterday is how many through balls want wide of the box. It's almost like passes Saka usually gets on rather than the CF (although I seen a Havertz heat map recently that also has him far more on the right). Is this an Odegaard preference or is it due to our creativity being heavily on the right? Rice wasn't making those passes yesterday on the left side, Cala wasn't either. Maybe we need Myles in to balance it.

The thing will be the talk was we will change our game to accommodate his strengths, which pretty much was get him chances to shoot in the box, if that doesn't happen he's not going to be able to offer much else. Early days hopefully he can get some joy against Leeds.

I think the rest of the team just needs to get used to the kinds of runs he makes and where he will be positioned. Its still quite early days.

Gyokeres clearly isn’t fully fit yet - certainly wasn’t at the physical level he was when we faced Sporting last season.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert well, I imagine in Gyokeres case, he was trying to get a move to Arsenal, then flying to Singapore having got that move, before returning to London to move home and start pre season (late) with a new team.

Gazza M wants him up to speed quickly, throwing him in the deep end. Might also be a bit of spite in it, a sort of "let's see what you've got" that might be just what Big Vik needs (and, conveniently, lets Arteta needle Berta a bit).

Yep, he'll improve further with proper match fitness. I thought he had a great game against Athletic and he wasn't that poor against United. I get some of you have watched the last two years with a growing sense of frustration, but can't we just give this season a chance and see what happens?

We've just played a blinder in the transfer window and it might not be over yet. Arteta on his part is making the right moves. He had at least half a dozen excellent reasons to start Havertz against United if he wanted to try for a point. He didn't. He started with the faster, stronger and more dangerous striker instead. He went with the fullbacks that provided more value in the attacking phases - and one of them scored the goal, setpiece or not.

Can't we just be patient for a while and see how the season shapes up? We just took three points off United on Old Trafford in the season opener but the fanbase has made it sound like we lost a final. This is how big teams do it: they get the results while they figure things out.

Klaus I think you can't judge from one game but we should know in the next 10 and elements of the way we played did not look good enough. We got the result so that's great but that type of performance won't be good enough over a season.Similar to Gyokeres he has a tough opening game perhaps a little lesson about how the prem is tougher where even some not particularly amazing defenders can give you a tougher time. The one game doesn't settle anything but hopefully on the next 10 we see what he can do.

I feel the same way! We seem to have a chance as good as any we've had in years. But being fair it's the proximity of major successes after what's turned into half a lifetime of waiting that drives the neurotic tooth-grinding.

Sort of feels like some people are willing us to do badly at this stage. People saying "its the same" are just plain wrong, our issues this week came from trying to change. It wasn't great but it certainly wasn't the same. Its going to take a little while for our new tweaks to click. Just need to keep grinding out results while we get there.
