If this is coming down to a couple of million Euros because we want to have it structured a certain way it really is ridiculous. A couple of million is a rounding error in the grander scheme of things, or a loan fee for Nuno Tavares. It don't think it would impact the player's thinking, but it would not look good to Gyorkeres and his team if they are forgoing significant sums and we are penny-pinching over payment structures.

The comments about the €5m becoming €10m if you concede too early don't wash with me. It's straightforward to make an offer that you agree to those terms but failure to accept results in the previous offer being the only one on the table. The club are clearly fighting this through the media. Awareness of such an offer also increases pressure on Sporting to accept as everyone knows they can only push it so far.

Like I said, in times like this you're reminded that Arsenal is not a serious top club and that it's run by amateurs. Just in case going three years without signing a proper striker to begin with didn't make that clear.

I'll say it again, but if you believe the deal is foundering on the margins of four €2.5m installments you lack imagination about what's going on. For one thing it's perfectly clear Gyökeres and Varandas have verballed each other.

Since then and in a matter of days it looks like they've gone out and picked up Ekitike just as easily.

Sicario2 Take it easy Sicario, it's going to get resolved. The question is just how far the bean counters are willing to let it impact our preseason. Arsenal aren't just cheap, they're also fairly spineless and brand savvy. A few weeks of social media turmoil and they'll pony up: Look at how quickly they started pumping out transfer news to drown the Partey charges.

Exactly. On a spreadsheet there’s no difference in value whether Gyokeres is here today or before our first league game.

But there’s definitely a squad building cost by not integrating him with the main team asap. Particularly because of his position and significance to the team that you want him to start getting that telepathic understanding with the rest of the squad as soon as possible - maybe it won’t make a difference, maybe it will but if you keep rolling the dice on these kind of decisions then it will cost you on the pitch. Both him and Zubimendi needed to be here a week ago.

Tam Exactly. "We have our evaluation of the player" is just another way of saying "theoretical monetary value is more important than the value the player brings onto the pitch". I saw someone use the poker metaphor earlier but this is not a card game: it's sporting business where the sporting aspect is secondary to the business aspect. Big clubs don't act that way when it really matters. The time for haggling and deal-making was before preseason began. Preparing for the upcoming football season as well as possible should be the only priority now.

Zubimendi turned down Real Madrid and Liverpool to join us, so that is one hell of a way to frame it. As for Wirtz, Liverpool have been talking to him for years and got serious about signing him at the start of the year from memory. How is that different to Zubimendi? Also from the point Liverpool were mentioned by the likes or Fabrizio/Ornstein took at least a month to get it over the line.

As for Ekitike, Liverpool have been linked to him for weeks now, they were being linked to him in June so this hasn't just come out of the blue for them. They've probably known for weeks what it takes and then had to move quickly as they needed to beat Newcastle for his signature so ended up paying more than they probably wanted. Why did they only move for him once Newcastle got serious? Probably because they were waiting so they could drive the price down for the transfer.

Arsenal clearly have a price in mind for Gyokeres and don't want to go above it nor are they gonna be messed around with clubs changing terms at the last minute. The likes or Real Madrid and City have walked away from deals which went above their valuation, were they not acting like big clubs either?

Liverpool moved for the player they identified and got it done quickly after hearing that Isak wasn't on the market. That's how you do it. They didn't feck around with the structuring of a few million in add-ons for weeks.

Re Wirtz, well we are still active in the market. We’ve had big buys recently, like Rice, which show our intent.

Klaus I appreciate that but they only moved for him once Newcastle had nearly agreed a deal for Ekitike, then they tried to pull a dirty one over Newcastle saying give us your player or we'll take him.
