If he'd been scoring a lot I'm pretty sure he squares it to Martinelli but he also wanted a goal, and we all wanted it for him but the pass was the right move in that specific situation. He was also probably still pissed at Marti for not playing him in for an easy 1v1 against the keeper earlier. Both feelings I understand.

USArsenal Something that is just as important as his goals is the space he creates for others. Having a legitimate goal threat in the middle frees up space on the wings, and doesnt allow teams to triple up on Saka (or Eze/Mart/whoever is playing on the left). It also seems to open up the top of the midfield. Thats where a player like Ode can operate with a bit more space and time to pick out better passes.

Yeah for me this is huge and in the games where Arteta has wanted Ode or whoever to use that space its looked really exciting. Now that we are past the tough start hopefully we'll really see this new shape come together and the players start to gel with each other.

We started to see a little bit of it yesterday. There were clear lines that we were using and unfortunately, we couldn't finish to save our lives yesterday, the signs are there. That said, teams in the Prem won't be nearly as open as Olymp was last night. But the more these players play together, the more of an understanding then will form.

Rohit look at all our rivals summer forward signings. No one has adapted yet. Ekitike is on par with Gyokeres for goals and he cost a lot more and joined an already more prolific attack. No other player new to the league has scored more than Gyokeres. Everyone needs to chill.

Qwiss I think you want both really for him to be elite. If Havertz is the benchmark and not an out-and-out goalscorer then I want Gyokeres to be more clinical than him so that we have someone reliable in tight matches where we're struggling to get the goal we need (a familiar story for us).

People are praising Odegaard for our first goal on Wednesday, and rightly so, but for me Gyokeres had a bigger part in it. He gets the ball between two defenders who are close to him, and he breezes past the first one while shrugging off the second, and then hits the post. This is not easy to do and is a far cry from what Havertz would have achieved there (losing the ball). His directness opens up space for others and really improves our wingers and attacking midfielders.

Havertz wouldn't be there. He'd never make that run in the first place.

Gurgen It shows why his weak peg is an asset too. They close off the space on his right foot, but Gyökeres just changes direction and takes the shot with his left instead before the goalkeeper has a chance to react.

Trossard was an inch too slow all game because he kept moving the ball onto his strong foot, and it made him too predictable for the defenders.

Yup, love his bomb forward as soon as he saw Odegaard on the ball. This team needs more of that, so much more.

Lukazan it instantly unsettles defenders. Part of problem in recent years is the slow and considered build up allowing teams to get set and be comfortable. It’s one thing having a wide player pull a full back about, when you’ve got a striker unsettling the centre backs it ripples throughout the team and affects their whole shape. I’d imagine Saka, Odegaard and Eze will love that space and uncertainty.

Doesn't seem to have quick acceleration but over longer distances he does pick up pace.

JazzG yeah this is one thing I've noticed that he doesn't seem to be quite as quick getting away as maybe I took from some of the discussion before he joined. I haven't seen him pull away from anyone significantly when those situations have arisen.

Having a 9 who constantly looks to go in behind can really benefit the 10 as it drags the defenders backwards and opens space between the lines of defence and midfield in mid blocks.

Even if he doesn't score a truck load - this might just be the biggest value add to the team. Occupying both CB's and pulling them into the channels will create space everywhere else on the pitch and give Odegaard a target.

daredevil if he can get his head up sometimes he'd rack up plenty of assists, there was that other chance where Ode release him with that sublime curve-pass and he bolted towards goal and Marti was free in the middle, if he was able to get the ball to him would almost def be a goal.

that goal also shows why it's imperative he get a shot off and work the keeper in situations like that. he doesn't have to score himself, but he needs to get those shots on target.

Meatwad this always annoys me with how we've played in recent years. So many goals come from a deflections, a spill, a rebound, etc You need to take the gamble when you are in a position to do so.
