Gyokeres made a good lay-off for the chance where he put Martinelli through on goal but beyond that, he's getting praised for basic striker play. Drawing a defender out of position isn't exceptional play for a PL striker and the fact he made a run that put himself through on goal, thereby drawing multiple players towards him isn't some revelatory piece of play for someone who has played CF for his entire career.

I'd like to see him consistently hold the ball up under pressure from defenders, consistently hit successful lay-offs and maybe, just maybe fashion more chances to shoot when the ball is played into his feet. I don't think that's asking for much.

Sicario2 he's not a massive reason why we're top of the league though. At this point, winning the league will be in spite of the fact he contributes the least out of our notional starting XI.

He's doing all the non-goal scoring things we need him to do. He still needs to end this drought at some stage though. My hope is that when he does he'll hit a bit of a purple patch.

Qwiss I'd really appreciate someone showing me how he's doing all the right things aside from scoring.

He plays as a CF for Arsenal and has made just 10 key passes all season; his pass completion rate is 62%. Additionally, he's made 5 successful dribbles with a dribble completion rate of 22%. Statistically, he's basically on par with Calum Wilson for his passing and Sesko for his dribbling.

As mentioned above, there's nothing out of the ordinary for a PL striker in terms of how he occupies defenders.

As far as I'm concerned, we're entitled to expect more.

I don’t like using single examples to make broad points, but we’re still not finding good runs he is making. The tweet below shows one of the most egregious examples. They’re not all that blatant, but now the busiest part of the fixture schedule is out the way I would hope Arteta drills the front five or six pretty heavily in working together with runs and passing to make the most of his skillset there.

That is a big problem with Odegaard, sometimes he'll make the most exquisite pass as he did with Zubimendi but a lot of the time he will miss runs like the above.

I don’t know if it’s because Gyokeres is special or if his replacements aren’t good enough but every time we take him off, we play more conservatively and give up ground

Been noticing this since it first happened when he got injured. Completely gave up dominance and let the opponent gain a foothold.

Would be interesting to see how many goals we concede with him on the pitch vs off it.

Mirth that's why we need him and Kai. The other options aren't good in the press. Merino does it but he's just a bit slow. Jesus doesn't bother, which I still can't figure out cos he was brilliant in the press 2 years ago.

Sicario2 we were also missing a lot of key players for those matches referenced. Gyokeres not playing was correlation rather than causation.

Also that tweet acknowledges he's been underwhelming but then claims he contributes a lot...please show me what he's contributing.

Don Pacifico he’s still our top goalscorer. Before he got injured he looked like he was getting into some form namely 1st half v Burnley away. Back your striker.

Sicario2 I'm not sure what your point is here. Of course we need to help him be his best self but at the moment, there's scarce evidence that that will be anything other than very ordinary. Nothing I'm seeing with my eyes or in the data is showing me that he's good enough to be a consistent starter for a top level team.

The excuses that people are making for him are incredible. No doubt he works hard on the pitch but he has simply come nowhere close to showing he is good enough to lead the line for a top tier club. He has 5 goals for at the mid point this season of which 2 are penalties.

Another thing which worries me is he isn't strong enough either, his physical strength is a big part of his game and against strong CBs in the league he gets bullied.
