I mean, the other options we have atm are not great with big question marks on them due to injuries and the level they can regain so I can understand if people still want him to start.. but bloody hell, if he is doing what is needed of a striker in one of the top teams in world football (ignoring goals) then I must be fucking blind...

His head hasn't dropped at all though which is good to see and hopefully he can find some semi consistent goal scoring form to rotate with the others as I'm not holding my breath for much else.

Smashing those defender occupation stats though.....

I've generally thought we looked better with Merino than with Gyokeres. And I want Havertz to start when he returns.

But I emphatically think that the only thing that matters is how well the team plays with a given striker and not how many goals the striker scores. And so I do think that stat is relevant, and maybe my eyes have deceived me.

All that matters are individual stats because that's the only thing that counts for FPL. Worrying about winning and losing is so passé.

It’s all a little muddy to me.

I think Merino is more likely to score than Gyokeres, but that’s as much down to the service provided to each.

I think Gyokeres pushes defensive lines back fat better than Merino, and it enables both wide/central attacking play. However, Merino is sharper when we’re in possession in our own half.

So yeah there’s dirty work they both do, but ultimately if we’re talking CFs they need to score. Gyokeres isn’t doing that and unless things change soon, he’ll be barely remembered in a decade.

Hate to say it but he’s heading towards a Gervinho/Chamakh status.

I was half joking - he's definitely not been good enough.

When people were desperate to sign him a couple seasons back - I remember posting the Primera Liga top goalscorers list and being alarmed at how poor they all were when moving away.

If you want to be more alarmed - go check his replacement at Sporting.

Personally, I think he will do better next season.

We have Liverpool next and the idea that he might score or assist does not even cross my mind, not only that, I honestly don't see him getting a shot on target, thats way to much to ask of him. He might sky one over the goal, if he gets a good day. Thats how bad it is.

He needs sometime on the bench to get his shit back together and that is only gonna happen once Havertz is fit as Jesus is worse then him.

But he might lose a duel to a center back and have the ball just happen to deflect straight into the path of a midfielder who then sets up the other midfielder for a goal. That is what true winning players do.

What about the idea that we might win the game? While his goalscoring has been poor, it's only half his fault. Arteta's strikers are horrible to watch and always will be. It is what it is. He'll have to score despite being flogged like a carthorse, just like Kai before him. Run run run until you die. He's not solved it yet, but make no mistake he is doing what Arteta is asking of him.

Havertz was maligned in exactly the same way. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Merino and Jesus are blessed with low expectations.

Coombs You keep saying this without drawing any evidence of how Gyokeres is actually contributing. We can be functioning successfully as a team with an individual under-indexing on their role. Having qualms with the way we attack doesn't mean Gyokeres can't and shouldn't contribute more than he does.

For all his foibles, there were plenty of people singing Havertz's praises before he got injured so it's not a case of absence making the heart grow fonder, it's a reflection of how unproductive Gyokeres has been. Last season, Havertz was completing more goal involvements per 90, with a significantly higher pass completion rate and a better successful dribble %. That's not to mention the fact that Havertz is effectively a makeshift forward. I could go on.

Not at this stage of his Arsenal career he didn't.

Sure, I know, younger, played as an 8 first, Viktor is supposed to be ready-made, etc. Shit just doesn't work out as planned. But he's leading the line better than the hyperbole suggests.

Kai Havertz took a while to get rolling in this team. Didn't he score like 2 goals in his first half season? Some were as a midfielder but he was useless and frustrating. I'm willing to give Gyok a bit more time too considering we're winning games with him and he's doing ok.

Going back to someone's question earlier: if we reach end of season and win the league but he scores nothing, I'll forget all about him in 3 years. I'm ok with him not scoring in some games if he does dirty work but he needs to bang in at least 15 goals by end of year to be worth his salary. He has a good shot on him and he'll get there eventually I think

For what it's worth, just off the top of my head, Havertz had the Lens game, the Luton game and the Brentford winner all within his first half season.
