It's an outcome based game. We may have beaten PSG on xG last season, yet they beat us on actual goals and went on to win the CL. We may have had the highest take-ons and carries and load of other nonsense, but if that never translates into actual goals directly or via assists, then it's not much use.
You can see whether the player is playing well by watching the actual football, not by geeking some insignificant stats like how many times someone touches their hair or how many times someone attempts to skin someone on the inside. Meaningless stats like this can be set up and manipulated any way the narrative demands. It's a lot like the NBA: "He's the first player ever with 27+points, 7+rebounds, 4+assists, 1,5+seals and <3TO in a 5 game stretch!!!!"
