No agenda from me. Just that United weee barely in the game when he made that error. Was a very costly mistake that gave them the momentum.

Other two players I look at here at Rice and Saka. These are the two recognised superstars on the team. They need to pull up trees in these types of games.

Stupid error but there was a huge team and management failure afterwards that massively overshadows it.

The issue I keep playing in my mind with the goal isn’t the mistake, it’s the response to the first pass received from Rice. Rice drops it to Zubimendi then breaks through midfield showing for the ball. Rice is off and running and Zubimendi doesn’t play the obvious progressive pass; he turns and plays it back to Saliba. It’s another one of those moments where we’re being over conservative and not looking to play through midfield. There was plenty of space and not a great deal of danger in taking that pass on, but again it’s recycled through the defence. It feels awful to say but at times United’s passing through midfield really showed us up yesterday.

There was a moment in the first half, I think it might have been at 1-0, when Declan Rice came steaming towards the Man United goal and you're thinking, take it on and shoot - and he passes wide and the chance disappears. As we saw yesterday, United players are quite happy to take those shots on and, sometimes, it pays off.

I didn't think United were particularly threatening yesterday, but they at least looked like a team when passing the ball through the middle of a pitch which, from our point of view, was disappointingly wide open. We don't have any cohesion to our attack at all. As James said to me yesterday, it's hard to believe we were watching a team who could have gone 7 points clear.

Tam That's my issue too. Fair enough if we end up passing it around back there because Man U have pressed hard and forced it, but they haven't. There's passes on and we just don't make them. I can't get my head around it.

I think this is another consequence of Arteta's coaching and set up. The focus is on those negative "perceived" safer balls even as you say in a circumstance where the better option is the progressive one our players just don't seem to kill for it. May be wrong but that might have been the one where he passed to Saliba, who cut it back to him and Martinez read it to block the shot. I remember watching it and thinking Saliba, in the opposition penalty box, cutting it back to Rice from a counter, tells a massive story about where we're going wrong.

Yeah I noted that too and we do it a lot. Quite often Saka or Timber will pull a ball back to Ode or someone else in that position and we'll pass. Even in the box we often pass when the shots on. We need to just take more shots. We try for these intricate passing moves but its easier sometimes to shoot and even if it doesn't go in a save or a deflection can cause chaos and provide other opportunities. There was another situation where Saliba had a shot on from the edge of the box with space and he didn't take it on. If you are going to maraud forward then you need to go for those.

RocktheCasbah yeah and this isn't new this is how we've played for a long time now, refusing those direct options and as you say but taking the shots. Yes untied scored some great goals but we rarely attempt those types of shots. There was an example I remember in the first half, I'm in the north bank so it's the other side of the ground but it looked like Ode picked up the ball and had one defender in front of him and Saka was free at that point. I thought he'd try and make a diagonal run into the box to be put through but he right away went further wide and nothing comes of it

We cannot keep playing like that but I don't know whether Arteta can change his approach.

Tam 100%. Rice had the same number of shots as Jesus, Odegaard and Trossard combined. That's not how an attack should function. And this game wasn't an outlier, that's a fairly common occurrence.

Tam Yeah, you're right - I remember James joking about Rice passing to our incredible winger Saliba, or words to that effect. Just an insane decision. As was the barrage of crosses we sent in towards someone who looks to be a competent keeper of United's net.

Qwiss there are two things top of mind for me. i have not had time to re-watch and look at the data, but it feels like a) we have a slow attack speed, especially when we recover the ball and catch them in transition, and b) Saka, our most potent weapon, is, on average, too far away from the goal. i would like Saka's efforts to be more focused on final actions. again, not fully thought through, just vibes.
