I was gonna say on the bright side Arteta's claim we are top over the past 3 seasons has just come true if we got a draw. Well just about, we'd have been joint top with City after their 2 losses and making up 4 points on them with our wins at United and draw at Anfield.

Sadly though, as usual, we're still second, a point behind with 253 points to City's 254.

It's hard not to draw the conclusion that he just doesn't have it to cross that line to become a truly top coach.. His set up is Mourinho like but as even he found you have to win playing that way or nobody will tolerate it because the football is uninspiring and boring.

We were lethal on the counter with auba up top under arteta. He signed his new contract and just went through the motions.
We shifted then to really attacking football after that. Every manager on commentary kept going on about how good we were in transitions. Nobody really wanted to play with us so they sat back. And we've been working on breaking those sit back sides down since. Which every team finds hard.

I feel at odds with the prevailing sentiment in here. The result is highly disappointing but the performance much less so. There's no powerful evidence Arteta's approach has failed. It was a match with few opportunities decided by a superb free kick. Perhaps the subs could have been better.

The difference between what we've been doing and a title-winning dynasty is in the margins. Seems to me there's a psychological aspect as well and that's where fans can play a part.

I believe Arsenal fans should gird their loins and recognise we've had a highly effective transfer window and we have an excellent squad and manager despite losing to Liverpool at Anfield.

Scapegoating the manager or particular players has reached an odious level. It's a buzzkill even if you're a fan and it likely affects the mood internally.

There's plenty of things about Arsenal that are more negative than Arteta's tactical outlook: most of the posts in this thread for starters.

Toys were chucked from the pram all summer over signings, then we got the signings we wanted so now it's the selection, the mentality, players who need to be put in the rubbish bin, etc. Gyökeres, who had the same sort of limited influence as Mo Salah and curtailed support, is now "mid-Championship level". The kind of doomed jobsworth mindset that's horrible at home and at work.

Toughen up buttercups, this is the one world we've got. If we say we're Arsenal fans then we know our positive task is to support the club's effort, not jack off to grievance porn on a daily basis.

Burnwinter Totally agree. People moan about Arteta's conservative football while forgetting that we are almost certainly the best defensive / off-the-ball team in Europe.

Burnwinter one game doesn't decide things but Arteta has been consistently unable to land the big trophies over the past 3 seasons so I think it's totally reasonable to turn attention to him and assess what might be missing. Last season we had too many draws caused by all to often letting the game drift away and not taking the chance to risk attacking and win the game. Yes you can lose but the 1 point or 0 isn't what costs you the title as if you go for it you probably win a few more of those games and the points return is more beneficial.

I also think it's fair as a fan to be demanding and want the team to win and be critical of the aspects that may be a barrier to that not just be glorified cheerleaders.

Burnwinter I get this but I think the thing I struggle with is that if we had a functioning attack, we would have beaten them. We had most of the control in the first half but very little threat and I think that's the frustration shared by others.

Burnwinter Both teams set out to make sure they gave little to nothing away, I'd argue both sides put in a superb defensive performance and completely shit the other out. The plan then seemed to be around 70th minute mark bring on Odegaard and Eze and see if we could nick the game. In the end it took a freekick that they could take 1000 times and probably miss 999 times to settle the game.

It really isn't deeper than that, the mental gymnastics that is going on is laughable. This was like that game when Martinelli scored against Man City with the deflection, there was nothing in the game and it took a bit of luck to win it. That day it went for us and yesterday it went to Liverpool.

Over the past three seasons we've had two of the highest-scoring seasons in Arsenal history, had two 50-point half seasons, and last season we reached our first Champions League semifinal since 2008–9.

We're not playing dysfunctional, cowardly or ineffective football.

The football we've played under Arteta is the reason fans feel like they can demand major trophies. That chance at major trophies has not been ruled out by a loss at Anfield.

You can argue the XI versus Liverpool, but there's no certainty starting Eze or Nwaneri improves us from 0 points and we can easily imagine why they didn't start.

Following football involves noticing a lot of things that are possible but don't happen, for reasons that are rarely too hard to imagine. As we all know, conjecturing on these possibilities is usually part of the fun.

I understand being disappointed with an unappealing result. Any fan does. But the broad-spectrum unhinging has reached the point it lacks dignity.

I'm talking about someone posting a social media video of Martinelli fucking up that run and there being 100s of replies saying "he's a c**t I never liked him". I'm talking about the claim Gyökeres looks "mid-Championship" level. Or this "cowardball" stuff.

These are spiteful demands from fans who are setting up a weekly emotional bear trap for themselves. If they don't get the Goldilocks Arsenal they want, the steel jaws crash down. If these weren't parasocial relationships, it'd be abusive.

When it seemed the Gyökeres deal might break down, there was fuming about the imaginary "£5m" we were supposedly risking the deal over. Well, that was bullshit and we signed Gyökeres, but now Gyökeres is meant to be crap.

When it seemed Spurs might nab Eze, we heard Eze would make winning the league an "85–90% proposition". Well we've signed Eze, so will anyone continue to make that claim? What else "might be missing"?

No one is "in the wrong game". We've been following this football club for decades, no one has gotten lost.

There's no tradition of the manager getting "criticised for everything he does" until a trophy is won in football support.

It's joyless and senseless behaviour. It'll convert Arsenal's next trophy into a big fuck you to all the haters, you included.

Arsenal is having a moment. This group has come close to major trophy success several times and missed out. Liverpool who just beat us have been through this. It happens.

We're two matches WWL into season 25–26 after a spectacular transfer window. Guess it's just that getting behind the team is too bloody hard isn't it?

Burnwinter as I said in the match thread I still expect us to win the league but Arteta is prob on his 8th out of 9 lives at Arsenal. It’s now or never. Next summer there is a World Cup so we don’t know what the ramifications of that will be on our players.
