Ok, we can throw today and last Thursday under ‘it’s only pre-season’.

If we lose v Man Utd I hope you don’t say ‘it’s the only first game of the season, another 37 to go’.

We need minimum 12 points from our first six games:

Man Utd away - draw
Leeds at home - win
Liverpool away - draw
Forest at home - win
Man City at home - draw
Newcastle away - win

Beat Utd then a draw at SJP is acceptable. Draw v Leeds/Forest then we have to beat one of our 2 main title rivals. You get the drift. 12 is the minimum figure for me.

The game against Man Utd is when business starts, we won't be experimenting then, we have one more preseason game and then we focus on getting into game mode. Ideally we might make a signing by then but even if we don't we have enough to go out and there and get a result.

People are losing their minds over pre-season losses. If we lose any of the first 3 it'll be a total meltdown.

Gazza M is that not normal? My memory says in other preseasons its often the last game before we see them together, even the Charity Shield sometimes.

Nothing we have seen in the last 12 months or so suggests he knows how to get the most out of our attack. If he fails to turn things around by Christmas, he needs to be shown the door.

RocktheCasbah yeah. I was expecting to see something approaching our first choice team play together against villareal, but arteta still seems to be mixing things up. I think the first 11 largely picks itself unless mikel has some ill-conceived tinkering to get out of his system

It's not the players or the results that are concerning. It's approach to games - if we tried something different and it didn't quite come off then I wouldn't be too bothered and put it down to pre-season.

Maybe it's nothing and these matches are purely to get the team match fit but I can understand why folks are cautious.

Qwiss I think this is true but it's because we are now in the 6th season and can't be in we are figuring things out for the year after, we have to deliver and we don't have the room for mistakes. We fucked up last year in the league which can happen but you can't really have two seasons like that so the margin of error for the team and how people feel about them it's going to be very narrow.

This will be the first season we've had a competitive squad. We competed with City down to the wire. But they're squad was miles ahead of ours. We had injury prone Jesus and Eddie up top. We had no right to be as good as we were. Our bench was a disaster. We've been trying to sell nelson for 5 years and nobody will take him.

We've overachieved. To do as well as we did last season with the injuries was incredible other teams can't do that.

This is the first season where on paper we've a squad that rivals the other top teams.

awooga83 yeah shouldn't be all season figuring it out but I'd give it a few weeks. Like I said though, you need to grind out results while you do it. We play United first, they're also bedding in new players, figuring it out, etc so I expect a win there. Then we've Leeds, no excuses. Anfield 3rd, is whatever. Then its Forrest and City at home followed by a top to St James Park, those 3 games are where we will really see what the team is made of. If we are in decent shape after all that I think we'll go on a run and start looking like serious title contenders.

Speedster I've posted something on a similar topic but does that mean we underachieved the previous season when we kept the key players fit and they delivered consistent high level output but we couldn't deliver a title. I can totally accept luck plays a part in sport but you can't just say it's relevant when it breaks against you. When it goes for you and you can't achieve your outcome is that an underachievement?

Speedster our not dealing with the injuries very well is a result of us neglecting the attack in terms of recruitment for multiple windows. It has been unacceptable and last summer was a disgrace. This summer is better but TBC.
