Claudius his league goal scoring has never been spectacular, this season is a drop but even before that he's scoring 10 and 9. That's well within Martinelli territory. Rodrygo for me is around the same area as Martinelli, Williams, Gordon, etc but he is probably the most costly of them. If we got any of them I'd be excited but he's certainly not someone I'd be willing to forego getting a striker for.

My biggest fear with Rodrygo is the physicality of the league. He would get knocked all over the place and he would have to either suck it up or crash and burn. He would have to get a lot stronger, he was bouncing off MLS in our game, and as strong as MLS might be at 18, there are bigger and stronger players in the EPL. He's got talent for days, that's clear, but would he deal with the bad tackles, etc., in the EPL, or would he end up like Reyes. (when he had to escape back to Spain)

I've always found this guys analysis pretty decent and says the same thing, physically in this league you have to be up to the challenge. I think that is why Antony failed as well, this league was physical for him and he has thrived in the less physical La Liga.

Havertz & Saka injuries play their part in this stat but no other player looked likely to break 10+ goals this season and that is a massive problem

We've lost the same number of games as Liverpool, they've just had the fire power to convert more draws into wins.

Gurgen this is why I didn't want us to panic buy a striker in january. I knew the title was gone regardless, but had a feeling we had enough about us to scrape 2nd. it would've been awful if we saddled ourselves with a middling striker in january and ended up finishing 2nd anyway.

Claudius I’ve said before he’s done well with what he’s had considering how the season shaped up. But it’s not a success story. As I’ve also said, a completely unforeseen collapse of the top clubs have given us a fairly easy run at second place, and every year for the past 10 or so we’d have been 4th or 5th place.

All too often we’ve looked one dimensional, lacked impetus, and played within ourselves.

I’d strongly disagree he’s a miracle worker or that this season has been his best in coaching.

JazzG I think it’s as you say - mostly having an outgoing DoF and a temp who didn’t have the experience. More them than him but he needs to throw his toys out this year

We've not been good enough this season, right enough but some of the reasons why are clearly not within Arteta's control.

Whether or not our second place is down to the collapse of teams around us, or the fact Mikel Arteta is the coaching equivalent of Jesus, the fact remains that he got us there and to the last 4 of the Champions League for the first time in 16 years, with Mikel Merino playing centre forward. And we were a Donnarumma masterclass away from the final.

Arteta is not beyond criticism, but look at how injuries have completely ruined other teams. Look at the injuries we've had. I think he's done a remarkable job this season.

This is his best season? Hell no, this is his worst for me - so many games we looked lacklustre and his game and squad management been poor overall.

One more season and then he has to go unless he deliveries as stated in the OP.

Possibly one of the factors, but we certainly didn’t start the season looking great, or as the free-flowing, heavy-scoring team of 18 months ago. I’d expect by this point five years in and with his own players, we’d look a bit more cohesive and adaptable even accounting for some of those issues. How many games did we talk about needing to change something or having to see a reaction at half time?

The Champions League run was great and there will be a lot we can take from it going forward, but it’s a concern it’s being held up as almost a yardstick for where we are. We’ve had a significant regression in the league this year, refs/injuries acknowledged, but we need to see the reaction to that and that we can kick on. Contrary to many, I don’t think a new striker and left depth necessarily is all that’s needed to get us there.

My general feeling about Arsenal is that we've done very well in recent seasons but we can obviously still improve. That's exactly how I feel about Arteta.

I think we improved slightly in Europe this season, but it must be said we bottled the league.

There were many factors in the league, such as:

The emotional hangover from the extraordinary failed effort of 23–24
The cooked refereeing decisions we faced early doors, which I consider the result of an informal PGMOL plot to punish us
The slew of injuries we had up front where at one point Jesus, Saka, Havertz and Martinelli were simultaneously injured

But my judgement is that Arteta didn't do enough to mitigate these issues:

He lacked the right leadership manoeuvres to transform and reinforce our morale in the off season
He doubled down on being outraged by PGMOL without finding the right notes in the press to win support and turn things in our favour
He didn't sign forwards and both Saka and Havertz got nasty injuries after we'd all begun to fear that outcome

So here's my Tet wishlist for next season:

The whole squad bounces out the gate with the preparation and attitude to rack up results and points
We aren't targeted by PGMOL or on the receiving end of bizarre, unique game-changing refereeing decisions
We sign 2+ elite forwards and we learn how not to snap our players' hamstrings for kicks all season
We react to player setbacks, injuries and suspensions with greater tactical flexibility and nuance

If we're not in contention for the title at Christmas, just as we were not this season, I want Arteta sacked then and there, so whoever replaces him can have next summer to pull this mess together.
