Some interesting thoughts here from Keown.

One of the differences he mentions is that Wenger's team had players who had won big things in it. He had Adams at the back for instance, and Vieira in the middle. The current squad lacks that experience a bit so they will have to find that within themselves.

I've written before about having players who simply refuse to lose - Vieira, Keane etc. I'm hoping Declan will become that player for us. I think he's got it a bit more than Martin. That's not to diss Martin, but I just think Rice can show that top top quality.

artetas approach involves a very methodical way of creating overloads. this season we simply weren't as proficient at creating overloads as we have been in the last 2 seasons.

I don't see arteta majorly reshuffling how midfield operates. zubimendi might add a dash more press resistance, but that's about it. pep played with 2 creative 8s with great success, but arteta has never showed an inclination to do that. probably the rangers/everton side of him can't abide it.

I believe the most likely way our overload situation will be resolved is by recruiting the right ST and LW.

Useful write-up, but this is a stretch.

Martinelli's perfectly capable of beating his man and has run a lot of rightbacks ragged this season.

The real problem is not the lack of creativity from Rice but the lack of threat from the centre.

I agree. It starts with signing a 9 who is an elite goal threat and draws defenders. If we can upgrade Martinelli (a big if), great.

Gazza M Klopp deployed a somewhat workmanlike midfield while relying on the three forwards and two fullbacks to deliver the bulk of the end product for much of his time at Liverpool. It just can't be workmanlike everywhere which is the approach I think Mikel tends to defer to.

A Zubimendi-Rice-Odegaard trio needs some real firepower in front of it and for the fullbacks to be allowed to provide more width than they do at current.

One of the thing Arteta has been stressing even while he constantly signals the desire to upgrade, is the need to keep the existing ones feeling valued. That should be the focus if we’re looking to upgrade Martinelli. We should still keep him. Too useful to let go of.

Yeah, but umm, no. If we get someone in and he ends up being better so be it, just means we'll have one of the very best on our hands. Competition is good for everyone. Still think he's got a lot to offer us, even as a starter if Arteta tweaks our attacking shape and patterns. If we have someone at CF who can draw defenders onto them the way Saka and Martinelli get double teamed it'll open the pitch up for Saka and Gabi.

I'm with you on Goku though. Deffo need to be all over that and get him in. Never understood people turning their noses up at him. Guy is a pure striker with a great eye for goal and an even bigger desire to get it. He's also pretty good on the ball and able to link up with those around him.

flobaba, if we’ve learned anything this season, it’s that we need more depth. Not less. Martinelli plus Rodrygo sounds better than one or the other

Potentially no surprise that I'm sceptical but I don't think he'll find this as easy against teams that pack the box against us (many!) compared to the amount of space he's afforded in Portugal.

SimplyThePest klopp also didn't rely on medium paced methodical passing. it was all based on getting the ball to the forwards quickly in order to isolate the opponents. we could do with upping the risk appetite in our passing by 20% or so. we can cope with the blowback as we have a very athletic back four, and a defensive freak in rice

The problem isn't that Martinelli can't beat his man, it's that he needs to beat him 2 or 3 times because he starts his dribbles so ludicrously far away from the opponents goal. He's devastating one-versus-one when he's on the goal line driving into the box, which is where he used to spend a lot more time. You'd see a lot more goals and assists if that's actually where he got to play. He gets that chance like once per game if he's lucky in the current setup, and when it doesn't come off he gets slaughtered by the fans because its a 100% failure rate for the match.

RocktheCasbah watched that over the weekend. Was interesting, particularly the suggestion that it opens up more ways of playing (potentially shifting the balance of our midfield to something a bit more offensive etc.).

This is exactly what I (somewhat jokingly) meant when I said you can not be certain what Arteta will do to sign multiple players to solve our creativity issue.
