Going by this, it would be advisable to take advantage of the times the opponents are out of their low block, no? Why do we insist on not attacking with any purpose when the counters present themselves? Instead of committing bodies forward and catching out teams while they have 4 players back, our players turn back and play it into the defenders and start the slow build-up cycle only to end up with corners and throw-ins as our main way of breaking them down. So frustrating.

It's evident that Arteta's priorities are so risk-averse that it has an effect on the attacking freedom of the players. Wenger's balance was tilted too much forward, Arteta's is too much backwards. Although I think one could argue that given the investment in the squad and the players we have available today, Wenger's approach could work better than it did in his final stretch.

I'm relaxed about the game changing as it's not like the rules have changed. It is what it is. A modern attention to defence was never to be had from Wenger, and we all hated that for the decade it demoralised the club.

At least in Eze and Madueke we've signed two more players like Saka who have the ability to beat an elite defender and shake things up, and seem to have discovered two more on top in Nwaneri and Dowman. Now we need to get two of them on the pitch for more than fifteen minutes, which is why everyone's bashing Arteta.

Speedster When teams just defend it's incredibly hard to break them down. Jose did it to peak Barca the best team in history(or at least top 3). We did it to city when they were at their peak we just sat super deep they created hardly and we knocked it Auba. They weren't creatively flat at that point. They were just against a low block and their was no space.

There's a difference between Arteta's team doing it to City, and Jose's to Barca, and what we're faced with each and every other week. We're not playing top defensive teams week after week and it makes no difference.

The issue isn't that we're facing teams with a good defensive set up, it's that we appear to have lost all sense of attacking cohesion and understanding that leads to creativity within the team.

Maybe we have forgot how to attack or maybe havertz Saka and ode have been injured and when teams know that they just think we can clog up the game. And the new guys aren't gonna play perfectly fluid attacking until they settle.

Tam serious question if we're crap at attacking why didn't city and Liverpool just go attack us? They both set up defensive from the start. That's not what you do against a team that can't attack.

Rice doesn't crash the box much at all.

Any way this Calafiori thing, I think its causing problems with Arteta afraid to allow his midfield to advance because of it. I'd rather we played with an attacking swash buckling midfielder than someone like that at left back. If Arteta doesn't have the confidence to allow Cala do it without holding back his midfield than he needs to reign the Itialian stallion in a bit more.

We attacked super quick under arteta with Auba and it worked really well as he finished those chances. So we can't pretend he can't get a team doing quick counters it's not rocket science, it's the easiest thing to coach. We've not really had a killer counter player since him.

Against port vale we put the through ball in for Gyok about 8 times I can remember. I can't remember him working the keeper. It was pretty ineffective. I'm not putting that on Gyok I'm just staying it's not true we're not mixing it up and attacking quickly. If peak Auba out 2 of those chances away you'd be praising arteta for being elite at counters.

Speedster I would argue he actively didn't want to play that way because he moved Auba on and didn't focus on those aspects of play since he's imposed his playing style. Wet constantly hesitate going forwards never attack the space, wait for the team to organise.

He moved Auba on when Auba couldn't be arsed. He fought to keep Auba and get him that monster contract. He's been begging for a new striker. And pushed for noni who runs in behind all the time.

We transitioned well in 22/23 (ie. post Auba) but for whatever reason haven't yet been able to replicate that approach. So I believe Arteta can coach an attack but he's either choosing not to or failing to execute so far this season.

Don Pacifico I think it changed after we dominated at Old Trafford and he made 2-3 offensive subs to go and finish them off and we ended up losing the game.

We haven't seen the settled tactics for this season. But all last season rice was clearly given licence to get forward as xhaka was before him.

Last year set pieces covered up a lot. We haven't been as lucky now

tazmania yup, that and the loss to Citeh that ended our season were the beginnings of controlball. I don't view Controlball as relentlessly negative though. When it works in offense it is awesome to behold, like the 2nd half v Citeh last week. They decided to be negative so we said ok then we're going to pound you and smother you.

Then we levelled and then it's back to the usual business.

I think he wants us to be really flexible but he underestimates how difficult it is to shift mentality at the drop of a hat. The reality is that no football team in history has been able to play 5 different ways well. We're not going to be the ones to change that.

Selecting Eze at 8/10 did pay off tactically with great chances, but not at all on the scoreline. The only concrete thing that bravery got us? A referee so embarrassed by not sending Pope off for DOGSO and awarding Gyökeres a penalty that he couldn't give a more marginal penalty call against us late on.

We got zero goals from our opening period, and our late goals both came from set pieces, one of which was scored by "bank manager" Merino of course, who copped abuse in the match thread when he was subbed on. It's not hard to imagine a similar goal at Anfield from one of our tall timber if Szoboszlai doesn't score.

On balance we look way better with Eze on the pitch. That doesn't change the fact our actual rewards and punishments have been quite arbitrary in these matches. Even Martinelli's equaliser versus City, a beautiful goal as it was, wouldn't get scored most times.
