I really enjoy his press conferences when he engages. Thought today's was nice. You get an insight into his perspective on the game and his focus.

No, it wasn't us. The sport's been optimising itself, we're just the optimal club at the moment. As Arteta said in his presser, it's been going this way for quite a few seasons and we've talked about it all that time. Slot complains it's not beautiful, but he can't coach it and so Liverpool aren't doing too well without three or four stars in otherworldly form. It speaks volumes Slot made those complaints then went and lost to Wolves.

The CPL play-testing Wenger's "daylight" offside proposal this year will be an interesting experiment.

Think it's entirely fair to say that watching us play in the league is boring as shit, but watching most other PL games this season is also boring as shit.

Edit: Boring in terms of the football on display. Because of the position we're in, games where nothing much happens are of course still excruciatingly nerve-wracking.

Right. When they complain about us they complain about things every club is doing but we do better.

The world is full enough of people who try and fail to ruthlessly succeed that you'd expect more pundits to spot their own bad faith in praising failed ruthlessness as if it were virtue, and instead be admitting it's our club's successful ruthlessness reshaping the aspirations of the rest even if these are not achieved.

I do still find the league fascinating. the tactical battles are intriguing. even something as simple as in our Carling Cup 2nd leg, when Rosenior consistently put 3 Chelsea players up during our corners, to discourage us from congesting the penalty box. Or how we dropped our fullbacks versus Spurs to create more space for our attacking mids in the pockets. So my interest has shifted from being awed by galloping runs through the midfield to these small details designed to extract advantage at the margins.

We could have done whatever we wanted against one of the poorest teams in recent Spurs history and it would have worked. There's been very little sign of that type of tweak or any other meaningful reaction by Arteta against all these deep defences we're told are changing the game though. In the haste to push the narrative about teams sitting deep against us, its rarely, if at all, acknowledged the flip side of the coin is Arteta also willingly congesting the area of play into a narrow band of the pitch. It's Arteta's desire to push up high and keep the action away from our half, and have our full backs as some of the highest, if not the highest positioned full backs in the league.

At times we've ceded possession it's rarely been voluntary and because opposition have found a spurt of form or seized on our indecision and nerves, often after we have scored or got into a position where we are otherwise comfortable. It's never looked like a conscious tactic to try something different and open the game up, though sometimes the later subs do have a similar affect when the game opens. Never when we're early into the game and in a stalemate gamestate though. You can tell it's not a conscious move, as it's not something we did early in the season when we were more controlled and rock solid defensively. It's not an innovation in our game or change of approach because there's no way Arteta is relinquishing that level of control over a game to open it up and be less secure.

Tam why would you willingly cede possession? the concentration and work required on defense is immense. we would also need to change personnel probably. have more powerful runners.

Claudius It's a point I've read here or elsewhere. Loosen off a bit, let the other team work the ball a bit and open up space to either counter or play with a bit more space. I'm not saying I agree with it, just that it's been said. Not generally as overt change in style or approach, but a tweak within games that are tight for space with teams that are difficult to break down.

Tam I understand the sentiment. But many of those same people were the most stressed on here the other day when Chelsea dominated possession for the last 10 minutes. Interestingly, when Chelsea had possession in final stages of the Carabao Cup game, we used that as an opportunity to break and get the Havertz goal.

First time in a while I've really felt disgusted with Arteta.

He's done everything wrong, wasted a 50-50 shot at a trophy completely and done massive damage to our entire campaign today.

He's produced a whole series of sluggish, bad faith, reactive decisions, the poverty of which you could see afflicting every one of our players who could feel how cringeworthy they were.

Mikel, I support and admire you, but for Christ's sake get your head straight because this is it, we need that major trophy this season.

I think this game made it blatantly obvious that this group of players is not all that talented (relative to the results of the collective). I feel like it could not possibly be clearer that this entire season has been one of the biggest coaching carry jobs in the history of the sport. But I guess taking jabs at the level of some of these players is "trolling" and 10 different users each making 10 posts per day saying that our coach is actually terrible is "not trolling".
