Football is not about competence, it’s about joy and entertainment. If I want to watch competence I will watch the Microsoft excel world championships.

I have sat through so many disastrous Arsenal seasons since the Invincibles. This year, just over halfway through the season, we’ve been the dominant team in both England and Europe and have one foot in a final. And I’ve really enjoyed that. The point of a big football club is to win games and eventually titles. And we are well on the way at this rate. And other managers like Luis Enrique recognise the coaching innovations we are making that have put us top of the pile

In all likelihood we will win the league. It would be very sad if we were the best team in England and I spent the entire season complaining about how gutless and incompetent everyone at the club was. It’s incongruous with the actual outcomes.

Yesterday’s game was frustrating. But what we saw wasn’t about incompetence and gutlessness. It just demonstrated the superiority of defense and how exceptionally hard it is for anyone to break through a low block.

Gurgen just in the last 3 weeks, I really enjoyed the Villa, Chelsea, Portsmouth and Bournemouth victories.

You complain that we don’t score. Yet across those 4 games we scored 14 goals. So clearly the team can score. So something other than scoring and winning games is making you say we aren’t enjoyable.

I am complaining that our attacking play is shit and our games make me fall asleep, not that we can't score.

Gurgen at the same point of the season when we went Invincible, we had 2 points more and 2 goals more than we have this season. And that was a team with two of the best attackers the Premier League will ever see.

This is what has happened to football

scoring is up. 2022/3 was the highest scoring season in the last 20 years. Overall shots taken are stable but shot efficiency is higher
this is because defenses are a lot better, with much more tactical discipline. So you get fewer flowing moves, and far fewer long range shots than before. Coaches are focused on higher probability shots, eg from cut backs
so the game has higher output but fewer YouTube style highlights than before. It’s not just an Arsenal phenomenon. It’s the whole game.

The issue for me is that the teams chasing us this year look very poor so we aren't really having the same kind of pressure that we've seen and if we were up against any team more on it I'm not sure we'd be good enough to take the title. We have to acknowledge that this is not the challenge that Liverpool faced when they were going against elite city. Drawing lots of games it's not a sign of a great title side and in previous seasons with a tougher challenger I think it would potentially see us behind. We may win the title but I think a big factor is how poor the chasing pack seem. So it's good if we do win it but it doesn't convince me about the way we are playing being the key factor.

We're on course for 26 wins, same as the invincibles, who drew 12 times. We do not in fact have an especially large number of draws this year. Or more precisely, we only have a large number of draws compared to the 99-100 point Liverpool and City teams. I think the main thing that has happened is that the middle of the table has gotten much, much better.

RowJimmy and awooga83, I think something else is happening with those great Liverpool and City seasons. There is a reason they have come and gone. I think we were dealing with a tactical disruption spearheaded by Klopp and Guardiola. They had a completely different way of playing and quality players who could execute it, and teams struggled to cope. And then everybody adjusted to those tactics over time and bought much better players. So the advantage dissipated. If I had to guess, the next guy who reels out a 95 point season will be doing something very different from what we are seeing now.

awooga83 never thought I would see an Arsenal fan basically shit on the invincibles. I'm not saying they were a great European side, but they definitely were a great Premier League side despite the 12 draws.

Tbh I'm just annoyed that we aren't taking our chances to run away with it and worried that it will catch up to us and if it does and they fail again then I will give up on this manager.

But if we win it then I don't really care how poor the chasing pack is, we would have earnt it, as we would have got it over the line and I'll be absolutely delighted and taking nothing away from these players and manager.

Meatwad I couldn't tell if you were saying I was doing that but to be clear the invincible were in a different football era when you normally only had one credible opposition and the standard was not the same. In today's league I think drawing a lot of games and failing to score is a problem that indicates not everything is functioning well. We've failed to score in 3 games so far and I expect that will be higher come the end of the season and I'm not sure many champions do that as often as we have in the past.

Merino is elite in aerial dules for a midfielder, winning headers, attacking set pieces and defending corners. Bergkamp avoided headers like they were optional
Merino is ready to make a contribution every game. Denis famously skipped half our Champs League games because of flights

In short, Bergkamp was art but Merino is output. He's clear of the non-flying Dutchman
