Fully agree with that, the chance we gave him given his inexperience, the backing and the time we've given him I don't think many if any other top clubs would afford the same.

Tactically, I'd say there's definitely something there with Amorim. But in terms of internal influence/institutional change, not sure he has the vision/smarts that Arteta does (albeit this is helped by the club now being less of a mess than United).

I think the question of whether Arteta would lose his hold over the dressing room if we finished second again is not one that we can know in advance. His charisma is his strongest asset and the players clearly believe in him absolutely. Would that crack? Maybe, maybe not. In any case I don't think the relevant question is, has he met the objectives, but rather, does he or a new manager (more likely coach at the beginning) give us a better chance of meeting the objectives in the following year. Right now we can recruit the players we want to recruit, and we can keep the players we want to keep, because Arteta convinces them. (The fact that we're in London matters but the history of the club matters less and less.) As long as that is the case he's our manager IMO.

Some mediocre, cursed or corrupt stuff will have to happen from here for us not to win the league. I reckon that hypothetical situation would be quite a bit less serene than the present.

Personally, in the event we finished second again, I think Arteta would be more likely to walk than the club would have appetite to sack him, albeit not much more likely.

I voted to sack him if we don't win one of the big two, but to be perfectly honest if the decision was in my hands I think I'd struggle to make it.

On a more positive note, should/when we win one of the big two, I do wonder what Arteta's reaction to it would be. I don't really have a sense of whether he would want to remain in post for several years aiming for a period of domination, or if he would rather move on to new challenges.

Anyway as Qs said, let's lift the curse of Montana first.

Burnwinter -- not so sure I agree with the belief something un-ordinary would have to happen from here. We're a week removed from a game vs Aston Villa that could have really shook the title race - and not from anything to do with corrupt/cursed "stuff".

The hope is our xGF starts to translate into actual goals so we begin winning games more confidently. But fuck me, there's still so much left to do and only a slim lead over Man City.

MistaT For me dropping back 6 points from here against an injury hit City would be sufficiently shit to invite a few questions, but yes, I agree it's within the distribution of possibilities ... partly why I think Arteta's job shouldn't be guaranteed.

6 points is a significant lead. this citeh team is not capable of winning every game the rest of the season. both teams will drop points, except we have a 2 game cushion.

6 points with 18 games left to play is decent but it's not an insurmountable barrier for City. They get to play us at the Etihad as well.

My worry is that it's "6 points", but also in my eyes we're over committed to the EFL and FA Cup.

Man City has been hit by injuries, so too us, but when we're playing Timber/Saliba/Gabriel into the ground (in EFL/FA cups) we are always dangerously close to an injury crisis to the backline that's largely responsible for us being in first.

I'd be a lot more confident if Arteta played only fringe payers in EFL/FA Cup from here, and didn't play many starters in our remaining group CL games. There's plenty of examples of teams that stormed into a great finish (be it 1st, or above their standard) by only focusing on the league (and not being in Europe/cups).

If we win GS will be irrelevant because we'd be 8 points ahead and have a better GD. It would be very, very unlikely that we finish level on points and GD and have to rely on GS. Though both us and City have experienced the situaton in the past, each winning it on GS on the final day.
