Two more sleeps until a Champions League semi-final and there's no match thread and little hype among Arsenal fans for the tie. Arteta and his players need to use this match to win back the vacillating fans.

Dom I think it’s because 80 percent of Arsenal fans know that whoever wins the other semi final will win the CL.

Also we are a lot more invested in the league mentally. CL seems like a (healthy?) distraction.

I suspect if we get a positive result this Wed feelings for the 2nd leg may be better but PSG/Bayern still loom ominously in the background.

Claudius Yeah but they also back it, with how they play and then win. Our manager talks like this, and worse, will tell you we will be so brave and then defend for 90 minutes at home against shit teams.

awooga83 I guess the thing is, even with our decidedly mid attacking recruitment in the summer and no Saka/Havertz/Odegaard for much of this season, we are, again, going to be minimum top 2 England and top 4 in Europe. Maybe better.

The lack of trophy is frustrating, it'll be even more so if it happens again given the position we got into - but where are you gonna go to get someone who guarantees you silverware next season?

I understand the fear of falling away like we did under Arsene, but this is not that.

RocktheCasbah absolutely. I hate Arteta and have wanted him gone for a while now, but by all objective metrics he’s done an amazing job. No sane owner would sack him.

This question is misleading, because the reason you change managers or buy players is never that they guarantee you silverware next or any season. You do it if you think they'll improve your chances.

If you asked "what player could we sign that'll guarantee silverware next season?" we would never sign anyone.

RowJimmy nothing in my post suggested we should sack Arteta. I don't really follow a lot of managers closely these days as I mostly watch Arsenal. I only argue that whether another manager can guarantee trophies wouldn't be the reason for doing so.

Sack Arteta in the summer and you're starting again. Maybe it gets better, but I think there is every chance that it will actually get worse.

If he doesn't deliver he has to go. You don't get a billion to work with and seven years and the one trophy you got is from six years ago ironically with a "rotten" squad you spent ages to tear down afterwards.

Every player is considered expendable and to be improved on. Same standard for managers

Players and managers are very different. It's much easier to improve on the former. Also the definition of 'deliver' can be very different depending on who you ask. We have never been top of the league in May and one game away from the CL final at the same time. Even if we win nothing this year it's arguably one of the most successful seasons in the history of the club.

I am saying all this as someone who is firmly Arteta out. Not because I care much about trophies, but because I want to watch football that doesn't make my eyes bleed. However, no-one who looks at this objectively and non-emotionally would get rid of him even if we lose out on both trophies this season.

No one who looks at this objectively and non emotionally gives the same guy 6+ years and a billion without anything in return. Unlike what you said this isn't even an opinion, Arteta is unique in football history.
