flobaba I want to win trophies and feel like our team is already good enough to do that. I personally think we would've won the title this year if we had been able to avoid the injuries to Havertz and Saka, had 2-3 unprecedented refereeing decisions not go against us (Brighton red, City red in particular) and had someone been signed that was a little better than Sterling last summer to give us some additional attacking depth.
Personally, I don't think we need to be bringing in players who will 100% bench our current starters. I think we need to bring in players who will either push our current starters for playing time and are close to their level. Ideally those players would also be young and have the potential to develop even further and usurp our starters eventually but even if we just get quality depth where there is little to no drop off between starters and subs, that would be a very successful summer to me. I'm not talking about going after squad players, but rather quality players where there is a debate on if they are an improvement on the current levels (i.e. guys like Nico and Gordon compared to Martinelli, Sesko or Gyokeres compared to Havertz). That way, if we were to get into a scenario like we had last year where we had bad injuries across the board, the replacements wouldn't be a big step down. We'd also have great options of the bench when chasing a game or closing one out. Not sure if I am making sense but that's where I stand.
