Big Willie -- it only took fielding a rapist so Klaus would leave
Summer 2025 Transfer Window

USArsenal We will NEVER get back what we paid for any of these players.
Which is why I'd be more than happy if we got close to anything resembling it. Just pointing out there are levels to this. Mine are
Tier 1- Don't sell at any cost unless absolutely forced:
Saka, Gabriel, Saliba.
Tier 2 - Sell only for an absolutely monstrous offer:
Rice, Nwaneri, MLS (though these last two may soon be in tier 1) Odegaard, White, Raya, Timber, Martinelli
Tier 3- Sell for a decent offer:
Calafiori, Trossard, Havertz, Merino, Kiwior.
Tier 4 - Sell if we can break even or anything we'dbe able to get for them:
Zinchenko, Jesus, Tomi, Vieira, Tavares, Lokonga, Nelson
Tier 5 - Out of contract frees or get rid at any cost even if we have to pay them off:
Partey, Jorginho (though I'd like to extend one of the two if possible), Tierney, Marquinhos, Sterling (luckily he'll be gone in a few months).
Qwiss Big Willie to think people on here claimed he'd be usurped by Kiwior.
Lol it was so confusing at the time. Calling him a liability, making too many mistakes, not good on the ball and other weird claims. Maybe some just took longer to be won over by him than I did.
I think I've said it before that I wasn't sold on the signing after watching some of his videos in France. In them he was diving in constantly to win the ball in contrast to Saliba who at the time still on loan was winning his tackles without going to ground. I thought he'd be a red card magnet playing for us if he played the same way but he times everything he does so well that I was won over within a few months.
Can't remember him ever being sent off for us so I was completely wrong and he's ended up being one of my favourite players at the club.

Exactly, whatever insane fee you might think we'd be getting for Gabriel, you can bet Wirtz and Isak will cost more individually.

He has been, at least twice, against Southampton (COVID season) and Manchester City (the game we lost 2-1 at the Emirates when Martinelli should have had a hat trick) but that isn't to detract from your general point.
In fairness, I think that when we refer to "people" talking up Kiwior over big Gabi, we actually just mean Dula. And we all know Dula likes a big call.
Anyway, madness to sell him, unless we get a ”Godfather" offer. If Van Dijk was worth £75m to Liverpool 7 years ago, how much for Big Gabi now?
lorddulaarsenal This is what we should do. Can't speak to Nypan but the club seem to like him. The other four guys fit our clear needs. I think getting a winger like Nico Williams is an even bigger need than a striker.

Oh wow. Why can I not remember any of those incidents? But yeah, point taken, it's happened. Is the one against City when we played them in Jan/Feb 2023? Or even further back?

Big Willie Jan 2022 mate, the last minute Rodri goal when literally every flip of the coin in the match went their way. He got sent off for a second yellow, a bit unluckily I thought, when Jesus spun him on the halfway line.
RocktheCasbah I don't remember that incident, or any of the goals but I think I remember feeling that game was one we dominated them from start to finish and were really unlucky to lose.
Claudius I said north of 100m, folks said that wasn't enough. And now he's only worth 80m. People need to make their minds up.
Anyway like I said I don't really care about the math. This is a/the hypothetical scenario. Keep your superstar defender and you get to bring in either one superstar forward or one superstar midfield player or sell your superstar defender, and you bring in a superstar forward and a superstar midfielder.
And some folks think the first option is the way to go. I would go the other way in the blink of an eye. And Gabriel is one of my favorite players.

flobaba well, I also said I would only sell him for 120m+ a couple of days ago but even that will just about get you Isak or Wirtz. The reason I put 80m is because that is just above the level of the most expensive defenders in history so is more realistic. Would also be over 2x our transfer record.
In any case, one thing that’s typically neglected in these discussions about swapping out players is the disruption it causes. Gabriel is the best player in the best defense in Europe. He’s also a significant contributor to offense. Who is going to be making last ditch tackles, distributing the ball from the left on offense, and scoring headers at will on corners? It will either take a couple of years to plug all those gaps with one player, or require other players to adapt their roles.
There was that weird phase when Arteta played Partey and benched Big Gab that I still didn’t fully understand. Whether because he wanted Party at RB or it was when the first rumours of Gabi going to Saudi came up, or he really wanted to play from the back, so maybe he also was surprised by how pivotal he has become for us

Claudius to all that I say, we've got cash. Flush with it, aren't we? We didn't spend this January even though we could have, and some say should have. We apparently stand to gain over 100m if we defeat Real Madrid in the CL, we've secured almost 70-80m already. I hear even more clickety clank, clickety clank as over 60m goes straight into Stan's piggy bank for finishing second in the league. We'll likely be shedding a lot of wages over the summer as well. Add to all that the 100m ish that Gab should fetch, and we are in the game for almost any set of players we want.
To all the irreplaceable talk, again PSG replaced Mbappe in one summer, and i'd wager they would even say they are in a better place as a club for it. Go ahead and list all the attributes the Frenchman has, that were "irreplaceable". And there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing it by committee either. If there's anything we know about Arteta (and our team) is that he / we are adaptable. We will be just fine boss.
No player is irreplaceable.

Not to detract from your general point, but the circumstances are quite different as well - the equivalent would be something like Branthwaite moving from Everton to Arsenal now, or Vidic moving from Man Utd to Saudi in his pomp. We're doing Gabriel a disservice to equate his potential move from Arsenal (flying high and 'challenging' for leagues) to that of Van Dijk to a club with title aspirations. Not only doing Gabriel a disservice, we're low balling ourselves in the process.
