The VAR role requires markedly different skills and perhaps should be staffed independently from the on field role without any clearly "secondary" status.

The VAR could be accountable for many decisions over and above the on field referee.

At the moment the VAR system amounts to "old mate off duty" for the match day referees, and it's corrosive to the concept.

The whole going to the monitor is also BS. When they go they always overturn. So either you give this authority to VAR, to overrule, or really recommend to the ref to take a look and then he decides. In either case clear role definition is required, and complete separation between both
