Genuinely maddening how we’re just playing the safe pass again and again. We’ve finally found the balls to play the ball to Merino in the pockets late in that half and it led to good situations.

The press has been appalling too. Really miss Martin setting the tempo on that front.

They scored a decent goal. The thing is we let Gordan have a load of time and space wide and Isak get free in the box. Saka and Martinelli aren't getting the freedom to play crosses under no pressure and Havertz isn't getting that space in the box. Its a nice goal from their perspective but its a very stoppable one from ours.

Another insipid half of football. There has been way too much of this so far this season. We need a major change, this team is workmanlike and little more. We need way more through the middle of the pitch. We keep just pushing it wide and expecting a cross to work out but Newcastle are particularly well equipped to deal with that.

People are whinging about Martinelli but he's been our best attacker. Sakas and Havertz aren't in the game at all. Trossards only involved deep. Rice and Merino can't really find them either, its all looking very disconnected. Either Partey needs to go back into midfield or Nwaneri needs to come on.

Qwiss agree with you about how disconnected we look.

As for the Newcastle goal, yes you can say Gordon has too much time to measure the cross, but once he puts it in, it's a great ball - from my point of view and time playing football - it's exactly the kind of ball if you put in, you're disappointed if someone doesn't do what Isaak did. Joe Cole just called it "undefendable", your mileage on that may vary, but I'm not sure you can be too critical of Gabriel in this instance.

Just probably wasn't with Livarmento each time. Also says Livarmento has won 1 tackle all game. Great 100% success rate there.Martinelli has passed more, had the ball more, passed more accurately, etc

This is the limitation of playing a marginal defence focused strategy. When you concede there isn't much there and it's looking like the season is just going to disappear at this rate.

Arteta needs to do something and the team need to be progressing to winning trophies soon there isn't much project time left

awooga83 this isn’t defense focused. Newcastle are out hustling us and making it difficult in numerous areas. A defense first team doesn’t allow the left back to break through in the centre forward zone.
