I still can't believe how much Ange was praised after the Chelsea game last season where Spurs were down to 9 men and he refused to alter his tactics so Chelsea carved them open every time they got the ball. It was seen as admirable or some shit, but it was just stupid.

I'm quite apologetic towards Arteta and his team, but at the end of the day, if he wants to break into the same group as Graham and Wenger, he needs to do what they both did and beat the City juggernaut. Graham beat Liverpool and Wenger beat United, so Arteta has to beat City in the same way. Although, I wouldn't hold it against him if he didn't.

He has to win a league title to be regarded as an Arsenal great, but Man City have rigged football in so many different ways that they're a different beast to 1980s Liverpool and Ferguson's United. They're even more parasitic than Abramovich's Chelsea. A petro state with limitless money has built a machine that has the best training and medical facilities, the best scouts, the best football directors, the best coaches and a squad that will always have 22 starters. The same petro state also has an influence on British politics because they're a major military customer. Unlike Abramovich's Chelsea, they are stable and well oiled. They have a strangehold on all of club football like no other entity has ever had before.

My expectation is for Arteta to keep improving our points tally year on year. We should be targeting 95-99 points this season. If that tally, again, doesn't win the title then that's an indictment of English football and that it's very, very dead.

nah, the keeper was the one who squared up to him, he had a right to block Vicario whatever way. The yellow he took wasn't even a foul.

This ref is just too inexperienced for the PL. At least he's balanced - their player got a booking for stopping a restart when Kai literally kicked the ball at him.

Kel Varnsen A mixed performance. Back four and Raya were awesome, but we also gave the ball away in dangerous situations way too often. Trossard and Jorginho, in particular, were very lucky spurs wasted good counter break opportunities.

The midfield inconsistencies were to be expected. We lined up in a 4-4-2 all game, midfield was always gonna be overrun at points and Jorgi has had very little game time. Trossard's role was also fairly novel for him.

I think this guy is genuinely the worst big profile player I've ever seen. His wayward pass when he came on, and then standing in an offside position to block a shot from his own teammate was laughably bad.

Heard that they've won something like 3 or their last 13 games or something.

Some of their last few big signings have come from Bournemouth, Leeds, Leicester, Burnley and Forest. That's not to say they're bad moves, but a strategy of paying a premium to fill your squad with players from English relegation threatened sides feels like a misstep.

I would take Son in place of Martinelli and nobody else, 500 mil. And they have 1 player that I can say, yeah he is good.

Online on reddit, and on YT all week they made the combined 11 and in defence they picked 3 spurs players and Vicario lol. They also are convinced that Van Der what Ever, the fast guy - Romero is the best CB parrying in europe.

And yeah they are not in form but still a huge win for us, we had the uncle midfield out there, away from home, they were up for it, fans were up for it, they just could not do anything.

To be fair late stage Arsene actually made many concessions in teems of our set up and philosophy to the point we were boring to watch for a long time and living off our early reputation as entertaining but suspect defensively. He bought many older players, fixated on the short term rather on just getting over the line for fourth and trying to keep his job rather than the long term and ended up abandoning the importance of youth.

Much as he tried to get us playing more and more conservatively in the period around 2013 onwards, it's like he couldn't identify good defensive players no matter what we spent. We just bought some extremely shit defenders and keepers. Can you imagine all of the following were signed by Arsene. Players like Almunia, Szczcz, Cech, Mustafi, Sokratis, Squillaci, Silvestre, OAP version of Campbell, Santos, Gibbs, Lichsteiner, Debuchy. Jeez.

Even late stage Wenger would have 2-3 attacking midfielders like Ozil, Cazorla and Rosicky to unlock a defence. If Maddison is marked out of the game all they could do was cross the ball in to Solanke.

Oh yeah? Felt like Wenger signings though tbh those years all kind of blurred into one full of disappointments, batterings, and just about scraping into Europe with the odd FA Cup sprinkled in here and there.

I know there were loads of scepticism about his ability to coach defence and how he was lucky to inherit the back 5. However the claims that Arsene couldn't sign defenders seemed like a wild one given how he brought through Toure, Cole, Lauren, and signed Campbell and Lehmann (and later Sagna and Kos). Those were almost all considered great defensive players. But you then start to wonder whether they were only considered that way because they were part of a team being carried by the likes of Thierry, Dennis, Vieira, Pires and being shielded by Gilberto.

What? No way. Almunia had been at the club since 2004? I only remembered him once he started the 07/08 season after Lehmann fucked up vs Fulham and was dropped. Wow.

Was on holiday so only listened to the game but cracking result. Only seen the very short Sky Sports highlights but from what I've heard about, it sounds like we were excellent. Villa and Spurs beaten away, nice. Makes the dropped points against Brighton even more annoying but it's a great response, without Ode and Rice too. Noice.

Great tactical summary of how we setup. On paper we pressed as a 442, but out of possession Partey was the 3rd CB and our fullbacks pressed high. Both false 9 dropped deep and wingers was the most advanced. Similar to Real Madrid with Vini and Rodrygo during big games, making it something like this.

We also didn't mind to cede possession and play on the counter. Overall worked perfectly for us as they barely got into our box and we won through a set piece again. The old if you don't concede you have every chance to win.

Bodes well for big UCL away games.
