This argument is incredibly disingenuous.

Aside from the fact that we're talking about a guy who's had a good month coming off the bench at Villa vs a significantly more demanding role as a centre forward here, you're always going to be able to find an example of 'good transfers' elsewhere that no one has previously heard of. But for every success story of that type, there's probably 50 duds.

Qwiss definitely. If Saka misses a one-on-one I'm going to call it a bad finish even if I personally wouldn't have done a better job with that chance. The idea that I can't expect these people headhunted to do their job better than what I (a person with an entirely different background who watches football for fun) would've been able to do is ridiculous.

QuincyAbeyie exactly. There are so many levels of stupidity to the argument "there is no one out there" that it drives me mad. First off just because someone didn't move doesn't mean they are unmoveable. Secondly as you point to I'm not paid to be a football scout, I have neither the time or expertise that a professional scout does. The club has a scouting network. I know they fired a load of our scouts some years ago but thats part of the issue. We need to find more Martinellis and we aren't doing a good job of that. Anyone can go out and find Declan Rice types but you can't drop that money on every player. I expect the club to both develop and unearth talent to supplement the big spending. Thats the only we can succeed.

That's a false equivalence. You're not being asked to finish better than Saka, you're being asked to provide some evidence that Saka should have scored.

It would be more like me saying we should have won the treble and then not having to justify that claim by saying 'I'm not the manager on 15m a year' that's Arteta's job.

There's very little evidence to suggest that it's straightforward for a talented scout or manager to identify a centre forward that can raise the level at a top team.

Qwiss I don’t think people are saying there are no strikers available. I think what Goon and others are pointing to is that there is a dearth of sure things who were available on the market this summer. Outcomes for young players are extremely volatile. Just take Arsenal. Look at our own players and purchases including Saka, Nelson, Nketiah, Lokonga, Vieira, Tavares, ESR, etc. Along the line players like Nelson and Lokonga were lauded. ESR was crowned by many after Chelsea. After all of it, only Saka is left standing.

So yeah, you can go out and buy any number of young forwards, but at our level we need more guarantee on outcomes than we did when we were 8th because inadequate players won’t play or develop in this context.

Yep it's one of the most stupid arguments ever. Extremely lazy. If people really believed that no clubs will ever try to sign players anymore and just wait for things to fall
