Liverpool look better than last season and Gravenberch in midfield is the major difference IMO. Having a midfielder that can receive the ball with his back to goal, turn and play a forward pass is priceless in the modern game. Weird seeing him in the holding role as he was a box to box midfielder at Ajax. He has a fierce shot on him and I can see him scoring a lot of goals in the future ala Rodri.

Salah is also playing better this season. He had great stats last season but he was underwhelming everytime I watched Liverpool.

They defend better as a team due to having greater control in midfield. Similar to the Spanish national team, they can pin teams back and create chances but they can also sit back and hurt teams on the break. I wish we had that counter attacking element in our game. Saying that though, overall I believe we are the better team despite being 9 points behind them - at least that was my conclusion after watching our match against them few weeks ago.

People keep talking about no new signings, but Gravenberch has been widely singled out as having transformed their midfield this season. They were playing Endo there last season.

I expect Liverpool to lose at least 3 games between now and the end of the season, but all it takes is one draw for us and we will still lose out.

Tactics -- to your points and praise about Gravenberch I would add that he's barely a "holding" midfielder in Liverpool's high press and tempo. He's playing a good 20 yards higher than where holding players (a la Partey/Rodri) typically play. Further, he's well involved in the going forward so it feels like they've actually kept him utilizing a similar skillset, but with a different positional label.

I'm going to deep dive into some stats/measurements to support this as I'm finding his resurgence intriguing.

DiabyKungFu not being good at coaching but winning the big trophies, only a select few managers are able to do that and at the moment we've got to we are a good side coached well without the ability to cross the line and win the big trophies. Until we do the team are great players and the manager will be categorised with those types of teams which even spurs managed to reach.So the question is what are we missing and what do we need do to make that progress and all factors have to be assessed against that in my view.

I still feel they can be reeled in. injuries and contract wrangles will be a factor. the annoying this is they've been doing this to us since 2016. we had taken 3-4 years to a decent side back then and shouldve been the team to capitalise on instability at the top of the table, but we didn't do enough to get the team over the top, then klopp appeared and rapidly overtook us. once again we've taken 3-4 years to build a team, again short in certain key areas which prevents us from running away, again there's instability at the top, and this time its slot taking our lunch. a pox on this salah era.

Gazza M up to around 2013 I rarely gave a fuck about Liverpool, but since the Sterling-Suarez-Sturridge era they've been traumatising me, can't lie.

Slot deserves every bit of praise he is getting, but it's not like they are at a completely new level. Before today, Pool were tracking their points tally from equivalent games from last season.

daredevil The big reason some aren't at all worried about Liverpool is that last season when they were the lead, the underlying stats told us they shouldn't be. So the question was, will there be time for those stats to catch up to them? And it turned out, there was plenty of time.

This season is different because their underlying stats for the most part supports the results they've gotten.

MistaT it’s not a resurgence. He’s a young player. Remember watching him a lot about 4 or 5 years ago. He said in an interview he doesn’t want people to put him in a box of big black defensive midfielder. The player he aspires to be like is Zidane. He’s only going to get better.

So stange seeing City lose consecutively and look so poor. How much would we give for just 1 City loss 6 months ago when we really needed them to drop points?

If Liverpool win the title that Villa result last season will hurt even more. Absolutely piss take the one season City struggle, we are not the ones to capitalise, fuming.

BUT this season ain’t over. Slot has never managed a Prem hectic Xmas campaign, they play Newcastle, Everton and Spurs away in this period. They can drop points, we just need a flawless Dec. Basically our post Dubai run but started 6 weeks earlier.

I think we're more likely to drop points than Liverpool at the moment, as we'll be feeling the pressure. We need to suffer a little so they can feel it themselves.

I'm frustrated as we'd have beaten City in this form by more with eleven men.

Pressure is definitely more on us than them. Lose/draw one in a round where Liverpool win and it will feel like it's over.

Every game we go into now is a must win. Liverpool on the other hand have zero pressure on them and can go out there an enjoy themselves. The picture will change if we're within 2/3 points but at 9, they'll cruise.

The Man City team is in shock at the moment. Same thing happened to us after our 49 game streak, went from looking untouchable to a shell of ourselves.

Rodri took that team to the next level but he isn't the only reason they look so bad.

JazzG I really don't think a Rodri replacement will magically fix everything either. Here's hoping it takes two or three seasons for them to find their feet again.

Very annoying that we've stumbled the same season they have and look to have gifted Liverpool a league title. Very, very annoying.

Whatever has been happening there has been big. Pep has lost the plot. His usual press conference sarcasm has been sounding deranged and fractured. It's actually great he's signed a new contract. If I had to bet I reckon he'll probably get sacked after never quite recovering.

I don't think we have just gifted them the lead, we had a lot of injuries to deal with ourselves and it was difficult period for us.

We are just over a third way through the season, if they have this kind of lead after 25 games it becomes very difficult to catch but they are too bad results away from us being right up their arse so things can change. We just need to focus and make sure we keep pushing on and keep raising our standards.

TambourineMan yeah this is the main thing if Liverpool seize this chance very much would have shades of that Leicester city season where the team you would expect to be the favourite slipped up and the opportunity was there for another team. Will be very painful if once again we fail to take advantage.
