If I was being super critical, Jesus and Zinchenko took us from 5th to 2nd, Rice and Havertz took us from 2nd to closer to 1st, but I'm not sure if Calafiore and Merino will be enough to turn us from 2nd to 1st. Still missing something to significantly weigh the odds in our favour.

This Partey-Rice-Odegaard midfield really needs to get in the fucking bin. I prefer a Rice injury to not be the impetus for that, but if our big idea is to play him as an attacking midfielder then I don't actually think he'll be that big of a miss.

I wouldn't be mad at that. I'd prefer a real elite attacking midfielder instead of Merino but at least I feel like every player would at least be in the right place in a Rice-Merino-Odegaard midfield. This Partey-Rice-Odegaard midfield is just some Frankenstein's monster where I don't feel like anyone is actually doing what they're best at.

Went to this one. First one in some time. Difficult to say a lot about the tactical aspects, but technically there are a few players who stood out. Ødegaard, Saka and Saliba (minus brain farts) are brilliant players. World class. Raya is also solid. On the other hand, Gabriel and Martinelli looks shaky a lot of the time. Partey also looks done. Really poor off the ball.

All in all, though, a solid start.

As for Partey and Rice, I do agree Rice is stuck in between two positions. Where as Partey is in his best position but no longer has that extra 10% that made him world class in a challenging position/role.

Qwiss — nearly every West Ham fan would support that too. His last season there only kicked off to a world class standard when he got a midfield partner.

Important to get the result some elements of our game that looked early season issue with other elements that I think are probably deeper problems consistent with what we've seen in previous seasons. Don't want to judge to much right now but essentially some of the players we know we've had some concerns still retain them for me and it's the reason I think we really need to strengthen in this window.

Eh? I'm confused. My big beef with how Odegaard is deployed right now is that he is TOO far forward. Odegaard is the best passer in world football and he is way too often camped out in the attacking third dependent on other players to handfeed him the ball. He's the best passer in the world! Just have him make all of the passes! Football hipsters hate it, but we have successfully deployed midfields with one guy responsible for doing all the ball-winning (Flamini/Coquelin) and the other guy responsible for doing all the passing (Fabregas/Cazorla). Now we have the guy who is literally the best in all of world football at the role of "doing all the ball-winning" (Rice) and another guy who is literally the best in all of world football at the role of "doing all the passing" (Odegaard). Whatever you might think of Rice's passing, he is miles better than Flamini or Coquelin so I don't get the issue. Relatedly, I'm pretty baffled by seeming lack of interest in finding another elite attacking midfielder to fill out the Hleb/Ozil role.
