when you say it like that, it sure seems nailed on we will bring someone in. Why would Arteta suddenly start trusting a player he has shown next to no trust in for five years?

At least we will get confirmation during Arteta’s press conference on Friday ahead of the Brighton game. It will go something like this : ‘ we looked at a few options but wasn’t feasible for us or the player and we ran out of time. We have options internally and I trust the guys. We can also use the academy players if we need to’.

My mate Luke still loves* going on about Arteta standing by the fax machine at 5 minutes to midnight making sure the paperwork went through (he's an Everton fan).

I wonder where we'd be now had that paperwork got jammed up somehow.

I was at a Pulp gig the night of that deadline day, I remember getting to Brixton train station and getting a text from Asa (remember him?), giving props to Arsenal for all the signings they'd made!

Because it was an obvious distortion, a fig leaf for a bit of business with a significant downside: in the form of a talented £30m keeper we've laid to waste and now can't get a move for.

We should have been able to sell an England international that had great reputation for far higher but the bidding war never came, decent clubs like Newcastle was never interested and we end up being able to only sell to bottom clubs so I would say beggars can't be choosers, decent fee

Clrnc i don't know about decent. We got him for 25, made him a starter, he was in the team of the season in the PL in 2022-2023, in the England squad, but still took a hit on him

And to get the kid from Espanyol, we have to pay the RC of 35...
Edit: remembered his salary, nevermind, it is a decent deal.

Perspectives. I'm ecstatic with that. It's great to get him off the books and it'll be great to see him playing again. Didn't think we'd crack £20m and this, finally, sets to rest a lot of my concerns about how it was all handled a year ago.

Poor business but that's the situation we got ourselves into.

This is a good deal. This season there isn’t a strong market for goalkeepers. Ideally we would’ve had competition amongst the top 10 crew for his services, but they are all set. So this is a really good fee in the context. Edu has fetched some £75m from 3 marginal players last season. Really exceptional summer from him.

Let’s not jump the gun. His summer and our transfer window will be judged in circa 50 hours time. No attacker signing and no matter how many players we sold for good price it would be a max 6 for me.

Claudius yeah, given the worries some had on here about getting any sort of fee at all, to be close to getting our initial outlay back after the season he's just sat out is nothing to complain about imo.
