That graphic does not compare stats at all. Each has different stats on both the graphics. One is stats for a forward the other a midfielder. As a 10, ESR is probably closer to a forward than a midfielder, so scoring him as a midfielder wouldn't really show his strengths.

But our upturn in fortunes came at the exact moment Emile was parachuted into the team, we may still have been crap (I think you're being a bit harsh, but in the context of where we are now, I get it) but we looked like we could play again. Do you remember the boxing day Chelsea game?

I think the real upturn of fortunes came during the aforementioned Southampton game which was the exact moment Gabriel Martinelli was parachuted into the team (in a permanent way). A lot of this boils down to whether or not one has nostalgia for 2020-21. I don't, really. Others do. By the time the team became good enough for me to become unblackpilled, Smith-Rowe was already a sideman.

ESR scored his last goal for us 3 years ago. Yet you’d think we just sold Gabriel. We aren’t going to miss him. Make space for other players and move on. This is healthy team building.

Claudius I don't think it's that abnormal for us as fans to be sad about someone who came through the ranks, made it into the first team, made an impression and has ultimately been left behind due to fitness/quality/both leaving the club.. You're right, it's totally healthy squad building, but a lot of Arsenal fans were very invested in Emile. That doesn't just end in the space of a few days.

One of the joys of fandom is that it allows you to be sentimental, leave the hard headed stuff to the management.

QuincyAbeyie long gone are the days where you had to watch football, score and win. It's not bad here bar a few stat people, but go on r/gunners for example and I swear even if we lose all is good if we win the field tilt, and xG, and xY, xZ and whatever the fuck they will come up with this year. The more obscure the better.
Now I see it goes for players as well. Remember our fans having to dig deep into stats to be able to pretend Ozil was not shit and lazy at the end there....

For a lot of fans ESR was destined for the top alongside the likes of Saka and Martinelli. In fact he had a silkyness on the ball that the other two couldn’t match.

No one ever really had the same aspirations for Eddie. Whatever their output over the last few years, it’s pretty clear to see one had a much higher ceiling if he could adapt to our new demands.

This is it. For better or worse, Smith Rowe was (and probably is) an eye-catching football talent as well as having decided a few matches. No one* has ever** argued Eddie was a future first XI player.

RocktheCasbah oh, yes. I fully understand the love for ESR and all the other academy kids. It’s why we will always love Saka more than Rice, Odegaard, Saliba and Havertz even if those guys end being better than him.

But I also want us to build a team that has the beat players. And ESR wasn’t there. He is not a guy who would’ve been able to start half a dozen games in a row in a title challenge.

When we gave him the 10 I dreamed up a great future. But he’s not the first kid I’ve dreamed about. Pennant, Bentley, there’s a guy here who named himself after Quincy Abeyie, Aliadiere. The list is endless. We just need to keep pumping these guys out and hope for the next Saka.

Klaus had a keen eye. But him leaning in on Eddie and many of us on ESR is a reminder of just how volatile youth trajectories are.

Think about if you had 100% value to allocate to the following players on their respective 18th birthday, how much of it would you allocate to each player: Nketiah, Nelson, ESR, Saka, AMN, Willock?

Burnwinter Wenger said in his book (and it may not be true) that Van Persie asked him if he could come back when he left United too. Genuinely thought he could leave in the way he did, go and win the title for the hated rival and then return to some sort of hero's homecoming welcome. He's neither loved nor barely even remembered by United fans now and it seems to really bug him.

invisibleman18 He always did come across as clueless and impressionable and still does … being almost as dumb as Antony is the only thing that makes Van Persie a little (just a little) forgivable. It's a shame, because what an exceptional player he was.
