I'd like to see how he performs as a backup, before writing him off.
I don't think signing young and hungry players lends itself to creating a competitive environment, as much as the types who were bought in to be first teamers, but were overtaken by someone, i.e. Partey, Tomiyasu, Martinelli, Ramsdale, Zinchenko, Jesus, Timber (this season), Smith Rowe, etc. because they are frankly going to be more talented than a young and hungry player, so are more capable of providing competition and potentially reclaiming their starting positions.
Our squad now has first team talent on the bench and on the pitch, which should be a good thing, but if we keep eroding any depth by selling them off and replacing them, they we won't ever have the strength in depth as much as we could have. For example, there's no doubt in my mind that Pepe would have made a far better backup for Saka than Nelson ever did.
I get that wages would be higher in that case, but that's the cost of having a competitive squad full of starting material.
