mdgoonah41 Do you really think the money is why we Nico is staying in Bilbao? I don't. We certainly could spend what we need to get him but he doesn't want to leave Spain - he made that very clear. Money doesn't solve everything, especially in a scenario like Nico's where Bilbao literally saved his family.
Our defense was a big strength last year but left back was certainly not and it was a glaring weakness whenever we were not playing well, as well as leading to Martinelli and the left side dynamics falling flat most of the year. Timber would have helped that last year had he been healthy. Arteta has also said he knows we got very lucky with the majority of the defense staying healthy for most of the year - to plan on staying that lucky is very foolish. Clearly he doesn't think that Kiwior is the solution for depth so he went out and got Calafiori, who can now provide good cover at LCB and LB, while Timber can provide cover pretty much across the defense.
You have to have a deep squad to compete with City and Arteta recognizes that. Would I want some additional depth on the wing? 100%. I was the biggest Nico Williams proponent on this board all through last season and I am very disappointed we couldn't convince him to come, but there aren't a lot of other options on his level that are potentially available now. We are definitely going to make a splash on the attack but it likely will be next summer since we aren't willing to compromise on our desires and personally, I love that. I'd rather wait for the world class attacker than settle for a plan B that won't take us up a level.
