The Lyon and Leverkusen games have changed my perspective slightly regarding this summer window.

Partey (if fit) is better than anyone we can buy this summer so managing his minutes will be our key to success. Merino helps with that as Rice can drop to 6 and Merino fill in at 8 against some opposition, and for others Jorginho can come in for Partey as a like for like change. This should give us enough opportunity to rest and manage Partey through the season. In this sense, Merino (or someone of his profile) is a must.
If we sell Nketiah, Nelson and Ramsdale, we might be able to go big on an attacker but only if the right one emerges. As Wenger used to say, only top quality from here on in. No Rapinha's or Coman's for the sake of another body.

Overall, I'd be okay with just adding Merino and shifting at least two of Nketiah, Nelson and Ramsdale. Keep the powder dry for a genuine game changer next summer if we can't land one this summer.

QuincyAbeyie I suppose there is informal talk as to whether its worth holding formal negotiations. And now there are formal negotiations.

Typically, players market themselves. So if they a have permission to talk to other clubs they can go ahead and do that with the some understanding of a typical transfer fee. You want to get the player on board before wasting your time negotiating with his team.

Sounds like the "internal debate" that's been reported over Merino's age has been settled then. Guess it might be timing or it might be because other unreported options have fallen through.

Interesting that some reports say they've rejected a £30m bid. Not sure I believe that and I hope we don't go too much higher if its true.

Not necessarily, could be that we have already set aside funds for the winger/striker role.

There are multiple sources other than Ornstein who have stated that we don't have any PSR concerns this year or next and that any dependence on exits is purely a strategic choice. I still feel like we have other irons in the fire and that's the reason why this deal is dragging. My own personal theory is that we have two potential paths we are planning for over the next 17 days:

We sell Nketiah and at least one of Nelson/Kiwior: bring in a lower priced CM (Merino) and spend bigger on an attacker towards the end of the window.
We don't make sales or just sell Nketiah: bring in a higher priced CM (Guimaraes?) towards the end of the window

samthegooner really don't see us moving on from Merino to a bigger midfield signing. Small possibility we'd get Merino plus a big name in midfield but I wouldn't expect it at this stage.

How the fuck have we spent 50m on another defender in yet another window anyway before addressing the clear holes in the squad

The only one I could see is Guimaraes. I still don't think we have moved on from him.

jones the large spend on defense makes a lot of sense. Just look at our possession stats. Our DM and defenders have the ball basically up to 30% of an entire typical game. And then because we have so much of the ball in the opposition half, we end up with a lot of set pieces, and it’s these same rear half players who provide the offensive threat.
So it is weirdly coherent.

Claudius and we’ve strengthened an already great team by adding a quality duel monster at leftback

Only other position we can make a marked improvement on what we have is left wing

Claudius it doesn't make sense if we still only field four defenders does it. Not only did we have a very solid backline we also play a very calculated type of football, what's the point of strengthening one part of the team where we're top of the league already when we regularly field Jorginho and Martinelli who seems terminally out of sorts these days
