Burnwinter his style is reliant on drawing the oppo on and picking out riskier-than-average passes. it takes him longer than the average player to find the rhythm that his on-the-edge style of play requires. his physical decline looks quite substantial too. his explosiveness and sprint speed appear to have declined quite a bit

Hard to tell if it's sharpness or general decline, but together with his injuries (and the rest) it's a season past time to move him on now.

Ten minutes on the pitch with Bayern mostly trying to lock it down isn't the best time to judge anyway

Partey's obvious main downside is his unreliability.

In an ideal world, you pick a rice-partey midfield in europe.

Obviously no one expected him to miss most of the season, but 2-3 months injured wouldn't have been a surprise given the past years.

I can understand that with the investment in Rice, getting a 2nd midfielder was tough with the spend last year but on top of a striker/attacker, it's as much of a must do to replace Partey this summer.

First time a game of this scale for a lot of our players, let's hope they learn a lot from that and come back stronger next week. We forget how young Saliba, Saka, Martinelli etc are. For older players like Rice and Gabi this is new territory.

Hopefully the 'shat the bed' performance is out of the way and we can do the business in the return leg. Arteta will also have learnt plenty, he's not the type to leave any stone unturned.

I see there is still a lot of debate about the Saka incident, both on this forum and socials. Frankly I'm astounded people don't think it was a penalty. Saka was not trying to hang his leg in there. Saka is sprinting and has to change direction. He is trying to jump to this left, his right leg hits the outstretched leg of Neuer who brings him down. If you watch the clip in slow motion, you notice that in the entire sequence Saka doesn't look at Neuer even once. He is always looking at the ball and trying to get around Neuer, but is brought down. There is really no debate here. Even Kane and Rio think it's a penalty.

It was a clear penalty if you had the right angle.

The viewpoint on Saka's left, replays of which dominated the telecast, shows Saka's right leg's movement far more clearly than Neuer's lunge into Saka's path. I didn't think it was one hundred per cent from that angle.

But the viewpoint on Saka's right shows Neuer moving a full yard across to obstruct Saka with his own right leg, and never getting near the ball. From that side the obstruction is unmissable.

The VAR could have looked at these angles, had they been called to do so. The match ref's chickened out on sending it to the VAR. Not sure if there's a procedure of appeal with UEFA, but we shouldn't bother, they will never overturn it because of the precedent set.

Gurgen for me it's not a penalty because it looked from my perspective in the ground that Saka wasn't hitting it round the keeper getting ready to get his shot off, he was doing the I'll knock it just past the keeper then force my leg out wider to initiate the contact. Personally, and it's my preference I know how football is at the top level now,I want my player committed to the attacking play and getting his shot away. I think Saka is good enough to have skipped round that if he had been fully intent on trying to get the shot. I just felt in the ground that he had decided he was going to aim for the penalty and I think that comes across it did to me at that time so like I said I can see why the ref would call it that way as well.

Anyway, Bayern really is beatable. We just need to get our act together, they were distinctly average yesterday but we were in our shells.

Let's hope our players capitalise this great opportunity to get to the semis. Not every year Bayern will be this weak.

Jesus vs Havertz is a tough one for the second leg. I think the former provides the sort of spark you need in the CL, but I think he’s wasted on the left. The latter provides something different, but is wasted at 8. I think it’s one or the other.

Gazza M he plays like this for France too. it's why Deschamps hasn't given him a starting spot yet despite the rave reviews about his performances

I do think everyone forgets how young Saliba is and at his age, seasons like he had last season are not normal, especially at centre back!

awooga83 That is your interpretation. Watch the slow motion clip carefully. He is looking at the ball at all times. He can't change direction and shift every single part of his body a meter to his left in an instant.

awooga83 no need to stick to your perspective from the game tbh. There's a reason why the refs aren't seated in the stands and why VAR doesn't use footage filmed from the stands - there are better angles, and they're available to us.

Neuer commited to block his run off. That's what the only matters, he tackled him. It does not matter if Saka force it wider whatever. Anyway not that bothered with that non penalty give since the ref probably only wants to even things after not giving them a penalty.

That was absolutely mind-blowing. White is really turning on beast mode. Too bad he missed his chance earlier, but I think he was offside anyway. Still can't believe England treats him like shit.

I’m not that bothered about their penalty call. I wouldn’t even want us to get that penalty if Neuer and Dier had done it. A penalty is basically a certain goal. It should only be given in instances where players are going towards goal and there is a trip, obstruction, handball etc that prevents that goal threat. Giving a certain goal off that Gabriel / Raya incident would be insanity. The referee handled that like a man. Credit to him.

I don't think their claim should have been a penalty, either, even if it was by the letter of the law. It would have been against the sprit of the game to penalise someone for making, and I've been trying to find the right word to describe this, an insignificant mistake. Gabriel clearly was just repositioning the ball to restart the game.

It was a bit like when van Persie got sent off against Barcelona, even if the ref could argue that he kicked the ball a few seconds after the whistle blew, it was an unsporting decision and there was no reason why the ref couldn't have been lenient in the position.

It would have been the same here, and had the situation been reversed, I genuinely wouldn't have even noticed that happened, much like very few did in this game until after it was all over social media.
