MistaT Look, I can't say I watch them every week but from what I have seen, it seemed he was loosely trying to play the sort of possession-oriented stuff we or Man City play but without the right players to do so effectively. Obviously it didn't work out too well for him.
When they played compact and on the counter, they seemed to do a little better. I don't think ten Hag wanted that to be their 'default' and insisted on trying to play a style that didn't suit the players available.
Whether it's good enough comes down to whether one wins meaningful stuff while playing it, I guess. Ancelotti, for example, plays a 'moderate' style of football that doesn't involve consistent, aggressive pressing and has done pretty well in recent years (albeit with a very good side).
