Clrnc I think it was similar in that for the entirety of that season, Chelsea were a comfortably superior side (in the same way that that was true last season for the Manchester clubs). I don't think many of us (certainly not me) went into that final expecting much.

We absolutely did, you're right. But that wasn't what I meant. What I meant was it was a miracle that we played like we did against Chelsea given how shit our league form was that season.

And I wouldn't say United executed a smash and grab by any means in this cup final, City didn't really turn up.

RocktheCasbah we finished 5th with 75 points that season, it might be the highest 5th position finish in the Premier League era. 1 point behind 4th placed Klopp's Liverpool and 3 behind City who finished 3rd. In most seasons Wenger qualifies for the CL yet again. Ten Haag's United has been abysmal.

This may be true, but it seems incredibly obvious that right now that ManU is a poison chalice job. Its a big job and a big name, but it could also tank your future if/when you fail.

USArsenal you think it is? With the money they have, the salaries they have. The fact that they sacked so many coaches(they are willing to give you more time then you deserve really, see the idiot they sacked now), I don't think it is. Just don't spend 100 mil on Anthony, 70 on Hojulnd(no need to learn to spell his name, he is not good enough), 60 for Casemiro. And another 100 on shit players like Amrabat, Malacia, Onana, Eriksen, Weghorst and the other ex Ajax loosers. That was the only quality they had, that they played before for him. And he just signed it up, was probably thinking that it would keep the dressing room on his side.

Go go for players like Yoro and they will be fine in the end, and I'm sure after the last 10 years they are done going for players like Casemiro, and are wiling to go to right way. As a manager I would want that job. 150-200 mil per summer, highest wages in the league, big name, big stadium etc.
Just you know...don't be shit.

They actually have a very good team on paper. Just up to a decent manager to get them firing. He probably seen how much resources and good young players they have there and fancied it

HomeSteak who was the last manager to go onto greater things since leaving United? If it were that easy, I think at least one of them would have succeeded by now. Reality is, the club is institutionally a mess and it takes some managerial force of nature to assert some semblance of cohesion in that environment. Not impossible but very, very difficult.

This is what you said (and what a lot of people said) when ten Hag replaced Rangnick and they've been just as jokeworthy as ever. Even last season people were saying ten Hag's a good coach.

A good season in Portugal says nothing as to whether a manager can change the culture of a club as big as United. It's one of the reasons Arteta's been so impressive at Arsenal—the change has been holistic.

Quality is only useful if it fits together. TBH is is the issue with United.

they have a number of players like Mainoo, etc who could play possession but then they have 3 centre backs who are not able to play a high line. So it means you can’t keep the team compresses to possesses and press
they bought a lot of Mickey Mouse attackers. Some of them might turn out to be good. But as we know full well, attackers just need to be elite now.
there’s a bunch of bad eggs in the team, Bruno and Rashford chief amongst them.

It will take at least two smart windows to solve it. No manager will do anything with this team.

MistaT Look, I can't say I watch them every week but from what I have seen, it seemed he was loosely trying to play the sort of possession-oriented stuff we or Man City play but without the right players to do so effectively. Obviously it didn't work out too well for him.

When they played compact and on the counter, they seemed to do a little better. I don't think ten Hag wanted that to be their 'default' and insisted on trying to play a style that didn't suit the players available.

Whether it's good enough comes down to whether one wins meaningful stuff while playing it, I guess. Ancelotti, for example, plays a 'moderate' style of football that doesn't involve consistent, aggressive pressing and has done pretty well in recent years (albeit with a very good side).
