Mirth we've seen the film before - when Trump was president Europe moaned and bitched and followed orders, when it was Biden or Obama they wagged their tail and followed orders.

From a highly cynical perspective discontent in the ranks is probably best for the rest of the planet. If Trump is offensive enough even Europe might learn to emancipate itself at some point

Gurgen Europe's had longer lived variations of social democracy but Europe has also suffered from pasokification for decades. And for the most part the response from the left (parties only now known as the "centre" in half these countries) has been to double down on managerialism and sensible-ism.

It hasn't worked well and it'd be great for Europe if the centre realised it needs to pick a side at some stage.

Looks like Trump is going to win the popular vote as well, doesn’t get more definitive and damning for the Democrats. In hindsight they should have held a short primary, Kamala was a not seen as a good VP so why did they think she’d be able to become President?

They chose the wrong candidate and despite all the celebrity endorsements which haven’t cut through to the electorate I don’t think they really got their message across. A lot of it was about Trump rather than what they will offer. She was part of the Biden administration so was always going to be hard for her to distance herself from the past 4 years.

I’d have always assumed that when the choice is uninspiring you’d get a low turnout which leads to the unpalatable candidate winning. Turnout in the UK for example, was pretty low.

Difficulty for American parties is they don’t have central coordinating structures the way you have in other countries. So at the mercy or personalities. But lesson for Democrats - this isn’t a parliamentary system. Don’t put up another woman. Doesn’t align with your values as a country.

There's a good left wing book called HINTERLAND from a few years back where a bloke from Seattle who's an anarchist goes on a tour of the "red states" and figures out first hand that the same people who are renowned to the rest of us for their hatred of the federal government are also dependent on subsidy because those formerly profitable agricultural economies are non-viable today, and nothing meaningful has ever replaced them.

Decided by immigration, or is it just that the outcome was influenced by untenable rhetoric about immigration? As with Brexit, Trump's not about to prevent the wages of US citizens getting undercut either domestically or in the global economy. He didn't last time he was President either.

RowJimmy Selzer is not "a respectable polling company." She's the most highly respected pollster in the industry. Which doesn't mean Harris will win Iowa. But this same release in 2016 was the one serious poll that caught what was about to happen, when everyone else was talking about a Clinton landslide.

She won't be the most highly respected after today. With 95% of the Votes counted Trump leads in Iowa by 14 points which means Selzer was out by 17%, that is unbelievable to be out by that much. These pollsters reputations have taken a battering in recent years.

I may be a bad democrat, but honestly people are idiots and constantly vote against their own interests. And they are so susceptible to fake news campaigns, Elon did a stellar job. With tools like AI at the disposal of the populists, the future looks bleak.

Gurgen Elon's reframing that democracy & free speech were under threat by the Democrats was masterful. With Thiel and Musk now in the inner circle, I imagine this term will be different to the last.

Don't know, but voters across the western world (US, sweden, germany, france, netherlands etc) say immigration is important and many of them vote for retarded right wing populists. To me, this is simple. Just have a sane immigration policy, and right wing populists will disappear.
