Nah, that answer was fine. He was asked if tonight’s game showed him Ramsdales skills. Bit of a daft question really and the last in series on Aaron, and one I think Arteta is entitled to snap at.

In general I’ve found the media hype around this whole thing bizarre. When it happened with Leno, none of them really gave a damn.

I used to think like this back in latter day Wenger but I don’t think that model works. The manager needs to be the one calling all the shots as far as the squad build goes, with perhaps a director keeping things even but on the whole supporting the manager.

Whoever succeeds Arteta needs to be a similar, all consuming figure. It just has to be the right man.

When was the last time Arteta held a press conference and didn't throw in some loose remark, dubious analogy, faux profundity or claim to be reinventing football?

This season's greatest hits so far include:

… the crocked confidence of my high stakes gamble signing will be resolved if he just acts like me when I chased my wife …

… one day I dreamt the goalkeeper could be substituted and rotated just like any outfield position but I lacked the courage to follow my dream until now …

… Emile Smith Rowe is a very important and popular player who both is and isn't at this level and who joins the team but doesn't participate …

… don't you dare ask me whether I still rate the ability of a player who I once signed for a surprisingly high fee, but recently have replaced as a starter out of nowhere …

Genuinely don’t see what you’re seeing there. Certainly no more ‘out there’ than some of the comments we get from Pep, Klopp, Conte, Mourinho or even Arsene ‘I’m sorry Holding didn’t cost 2m’ Wenger.

Funnily enough I think Arteta has been in much better form this season, much more personality than the bland, tetchy version we’ve seen in the last couple of years.

goon Let's see, what's different about the five other managers you've mentioned? Oh yeah, they've all won titles in at least two top national leagues. I happen to think three out of the five are incredible arseholes, too, but that's a side issue.

I've been enjoying Arteta's little drift into what you might call "the Cantona Zone" in his media appearances as much as anyone from an entertainment perspective.

To put it back in the context of this thread: Arsenal is Arsenal, not Arteta, not KSE, not Ødegaard. Under the administrative rules of the sport, the half a billion pounds KSE has spent on players has to be matched by our revenues in the end.

The brilliant young squad we've assembled is entering its prime years and Arsenal needs to win trophies, both to justify its purpose as an organisation and to balance its books for the sake of the future. Arteta is a replaceable servant of that project like any player, not its beneficiary. Let him quote Sun Tzu and Kierkegaard in his pressers when he's earnt it.

Talking about Arsenal, not KSE or Stan—that was my point. FFP applies to us whatever Stan thinks. KSE can fall and Arsenal will still stand, just with a great fat pile on the negative side of the FFP ledger.

Arteta's dropped off a bit with his own work so far this season and preseason. Every point we've dropped can be sheeted home to him. We've had self-inflicted injury and selection issues, tactical sloppiness and errors, questionable substitutions, and we've signed a suboptimal starter.

This new more hammy press conference persona isn't anything to get distressed about, but it's irritating when Saka's not available for Bournemouth due to being overplayed, and we're tossing up three questionable options for Xhaka's old role.

Our performances have been poor so far compared to how we started last season. Why? It's September and unless Arteta sorts it out we will be well off the pace soon. He's a talented coach but winning the league requires 99% efforts, not 90%.

Don Pacifico artetas level of backing has been unprecedented in the history of the club tbf. he should be judged slightly differently to other managers because he's gotten almost everything he wanted

anyway, he's annoyed me with his handling of the last month but I've learned not to underestimate him. I thought his recruitment thus summer was daft apart from rice, but he made something of it.

Red flag for me is that he’s not really shown much inspiration in trying to turn the last couple of games. Take a risk. Flood the middle of the pitch.
