Even that era wasn't that great compared to the 90's when England alone had Shearer, Sheringham, Ferdinand, Cole, Wright, Fowler, Collymore etc.

daredevil TBF if you time travelled back and dropped in players like Toney and Watkins they'd fit in with those names no problem. The games changed though and someone like Andy Cole or Les Ferdinand wouldn't stand out today. Kane would be at the top of that list with Shearer too.

Qwiss I agree, if you factor in how far tactics, fitness and training have improved.

However, if you look at the relative impact those players had for their time with the training they received then Watkins and Toney aren't anywhere near. Andy Cole + Ferdinand had approximately 200 goals in the top flight, Watkins and Toney will barely cross 100.

Mirth but who is? The game has changed. Only a handful of strikers rack up those numbers in the top leagues and not down to a lack of talent, its tactical.

There is also talk that if Havertz continues to impress as CF we may not look to sign a top CF in the summer and instead put our resources towards a top CM and wide player.

Probably a bit premature to start saying Havertz should be our CF going forward but I won't be complaining if we blow our money on a top CM and wide player!

JazzG we have 2 starting quality wide players, whats the point of spending big there if we have to continue with lesser players in other positions? CF, DM and LB should be the main areas for upgrading this summer. I don't mind a back up winger coming in but no reason to push the boat out for a wide player. Would be an awful use of our resources.

Problem with CF is apart from Osimhen I can't see another striker who comes in and improves us. He'll be stupidly expensive and I think we are gonna end up in a bidding war with PSG. If we are gonna spend big money on a player from Serie A Leao is the one we need to go for imo, I think he can play across the whole forward line.

Most important signing we make in the summer is CM, that has to be our No.1 focus this summer, if we sign a top player there we can afford to miss out in other positions.

Don't think the strikers that are out there are any more of a gamble than the wingers. Leao isn't what we need anyway, we have Martinelli who is as good or better, and younger and we have Trossard on that left side too. Leao isn't really a right sided player either, not that you'd spend £100m+ to compete with Saka, that'd be madness. Like I said I wouldn't mind signing a cheaper winger but using most of our transfer budget to get one would be a mistake IMO.

I agree here. Although I think we need 2 big summer signings. One up top and one in midfield.

At the very least, if you're reassured by whatever ConorMarblehalls says but is sceptical to what a far more reliable account tweets,it just seems like you'll be reassured by good news and sceptical to bad news.

kind of liking what I am seeing of Havertz there recently. if he can keep on improving and hit 15ish goals a season with everything else he is doing... would think twice about where we spend the bulk of our attacking signing on.

Needs to prove he can be consistent for the rest of the season though.

True but never hurts to have versatile players.

I also don't subscribe to this theory we need a 25+ goal scorer striker. City and Liverpool in recent years have both proven that. It could be argued that Haaland is what got them the treble but I think they won the treble as other teams in Europe dipped in quality rather than Haaland making City better. City of a few years back was a better team than City last season imo.

I think Leao is ready to become one of the top players in the world and I think Leao could even become a striker, he gives me Thierry Henry vibes....the type of player you pay money to watch. Signing someone like him is a bit of a pipe dream but if he was to become available we should be all in for someone like that. I think our summer signings will depend heavily on how we finish but also who we can flog in the summer. If we can move Ramsdale, Eddie & ESR for good money we might even go big in all three positions.

Martinelli is one of the weaker players in the XI these days. He made up for his lack of composure, tunnel vision, one-footedness, etc. with end product last year, not so much this year. Still love him but signing a top winger would help bring the squad up a level, even if Martinelli hangs on to the LW starting spot. Jesus is always hurt and Trossard is nice but not a top player, and I wouldn't mind moving one of them on to make room.
