He's bloody awesome isn't he? Love how he can drop his shoulder and take opponents out of the game at will. He does just about everything brilliantly.

He offers very little going forward. Compare that to White's ability to keep possession, play triangles with Saka and Ødegaard, or overlap Saka out wide, and it becomes clear that Tomiyasu is too limited as a footballer. If we are to beat City, then we need quality players in every position. We can't afford to have 2-3 average to decent players in the team.

Clrnc Actually rewatched the first half and Ayew beats Tomi once on the outside and delivered a nothing ball. Wasn't like the defending 1v1 was bad or anything since he just tricked his way past. Just once in the entire half. He had him in his pocket the rest of the time and was strong in the tackle.

That was my recollection. He looked really solidly defensively. Agree with Kel Varnsen regarding his offensive contribution but that's not new news. Nor is he completely inept. More game time with Martinelli will help, even if he's never going to be mega in the final third.

But certainly when I watched him in real time yesterday he didn't look as good as when I watched on the re run. But like qs say he is better on the right and he's a CB anyway

He was great when he came on. All of the subs were good. Arteta did well there.

It's great to be able to rely on these players as part of the squad.

Perfect way to see out a match. Don't know why teams don't do this more, just pass and keep possession.

My most vivid memory of a team doing this was Barca in the Paris final. I was so depressed we were trying to chase the game back but couldn't even touch the ball at all for the final 7 mins

Clrnc hm, if they're only including Tomiyasu's time and ignoring the time Havertz held it then I don't agree with that stat. However if 19 throw-ins took longer from the ball was out of play until it was thrown back in, then it's ridiculously inconsistent.

Edit: Based on the comments, seems like 19 throw-ins took longer than the time Tomiyasu held it. Which is misleading.

QuincyAbeyie Agreed. We took too long with the throw. Tomiyasu wrongly picked up the yellow but between he and Havertz a booking was in order. Can't be holding the game up for almost 30 seconds for a throw.

QuincyAbeyie there were 6 thrown ins that took longer than the total time of the Tomi thrown during the match.

I don't have a huge problem with the initial Tomi yellow though and it was quite clear that we were starting to waste time. Why we were doing it on the 60th min I don't know.

I'm imagining the constant shit show that would be the inboxes of the responsible Premier League, FA and PGMOL staff and whether they could ever care about how long throw-ins are taking … imagine you're a young firebrand trying to reform this stuff at PGMOL, then you realise you're about to be called into a Zoom with your line manager with Howard Webb dialling in from Coney Island.

If I were to guess at a reason none of this stuff seems to get any better, I reckon the strained corporate structure in which the Premier League is part of the Football Association for the purpose of the Rules, but isn't run by the FA except for certain veto powers over its executive appointments, and Professional Game Match Officials Limited is yet another independent company co-owned by the FA, Premier League and Football League, that cluster's gotta play a part.

Not up on the history, but I assume it's like this to ring-fence more of the filthy lucre from the top flight.

Qwiss agree with the view of just don't time waste. We've all been frustrated at keepers doing that stuff can't say it doesn't matter if you collectively do it and it will likely make people think twice.

Started off with spicy sarcasm and thought he was going to let loose. Did rein it in by the the time he was asked about the two yellows, and he said '[these are] the standards, I think we will see 8 against 8 this season' 🙂 The interviewer kept baiting him shamelessly with loaded questioning.
