Don Pacifico I really don't think this is a correct assessment. Saves are less important if you don't have to make them, and the rest of the game has to be weighted more heavily.

Nearly ended our season together with Rice today, it was easily as bad as any keeping error we've had. He's been good but he's got one of these in his locker every now and then

Don Pacifico this guy integrates so well into the team. You’re missing the fact that we control the game so well with him. This mistake today happened because he’s such an integral and trusted part of build up. Ball comes back, and he quickly helps draw offense and build up again. He’s also ridiculous at his long balls. Think how often today he launched to and hit Saka.

A goalie who primarily saves shots is for midtable teams. We need our goalie to mainly be good on offense. Which he has been aside from this mess up today and a few others

Plus it's simply a risk you have to live with if you ask your goalie to be a part of your build up or use their feet regularly and comfortably. The likes of Alison, Ederson, etc occasionally misplay passes as well and get punished.

Even Odegaard gets his passes picked off every now and then.

Qwiss people going "you can't play out from the back and not do what Raya did today" is a weird take. It was a horrible mistake, and that doesn't mean I want Ramsdale in goal.

Qwiss Ramsdale had three problems:

1) he was panicky as fuck and spread that shit through the defence, costing us control and games

2) both his long and short kicking accuracy is inconsistent

3) unable to play behind the high line because he was not comfortable with a high starting position.

Not saying Raya didn't make a poor error - he did, but ultimately it didn't cost us and he was steady afterwards. Like Claud points out, he is a significant reason we are able to control games and keep all these clean sheets because of his positive qualities. Not really interested in pointless comparisons to Ramsdale. I have no fondness for Raya and I like Aaron's character, but I'm not a fanboy and I don't do favorites. I want what's best ( better) for Arsenal, and that's what Raya has been. Simple.

I get the things people are saying. His catching is good and has aided our control but I think his preference for catching may also mean he occasionally allows the opposition chances by avoiding coming out in situations when other 'keepers would just punch.

His distribution is good but not to the point that I'd consider it the weapon some make out. Happy to be proven wrong on that point.

And the notion that saves aren't important...I get it but I go back to the fact that there are (and will be) games where we don't have control. The past month or so has shown us that (particularly in Europe) and not having a GK who excels at 'the basics' hinders us. Control ball doesn't always work and in those situations, Raya is a passenger.

Also, you continently haven’t mentioned his match winning save v wolves.

This thread is dead when Raya keeps clean sheets but one error and the knives are out.

Raya did incredible to recover from that today and overall this season it’s proved Arteta made the right call in dropping Ramsdale.

Conclusion: Raya has been net positive and will only get better.

If we try to ignore the unnecessary personal jabs, I agree that Raya is a good player and I'm now happy enough with having him in goal for us. But it needs to be said, that mistake was horrible today. Easily worse than anything we've seen in quite some time.

That said, he was really good in the air in general and relieved a lot of the pressure that stemmed from his mistake.

Yes, because normally there's not that much to comment on in terms of his performance.

Hardly knives out btw if you actually read the more negative comments in this thread. And my opinion hasn't changed in the last couple of months, I just don't need to keep repeating myself when we keep a clean sheet: he's okay, shielded by our best defensive unit of the last 25 years but not convinced he was worth the hassle.

Save against Wolves was good but honestly, offset by other moments he could have probably done a bit better on over that time period.

I think it has 100% been worth it. I think in the last few months in particular Raya has looked a better keeper than Ramsdale ever has. Calm and dominant in the air, his passing is generally very good. Today he made a big cock up, cannot defend that and could have cost us the game. In most games we'd see it out 3-1 or score more but in a local derby you want to make the match as boring as possible and he injected life into them. But when you push the keeper to be brave with the ball these things can happen. Apart from the mistake I don't think he did much wrong. One of the best and ruthless things Arteta did was benching Ramsdale, hopefully sent a signal to the whole squad to get their shit together.

I don't think Raya is an elite keeper and we should keep looking to find someone better but he is clearly the best keeper we have.

Anyways like I said, Raya is a good player, but one who is just as error prone as Ramsdale is. Their kicking doesn't seem to be a world a difference apart, but Raya's ability to catch the ball rather than parry it is ome area where he is a clear improvement.
