One could argue B has more tangible benefits than A in a world where it's either this or that. But for me I think if we want another striker for 90m now we can just buy him. It's not like we have no money

Toney's never going to be an option for Arteta - he's consistently tried to bring in attacking players that can play in at least 2 positions or systems. Having a 'Plan B' player is not how he views the game.

mdgoonah41 It's also the case that after this shakes out between Raya and Ramsdale, one of the two will move on, much as Leno did. Except this time we should take at least £20m when that takes place, albeit needing to find our next prospective keeper.

I can't look at this deal and think both players will be happy with their lot next summer.

well, it depends how it shakes out really. If it is a genuine competition between the two and shirts are earned on merit, it could work, there are enough games to go around and enough trust for the manager (in the players) to rotate as he sees fits, but history certainly suggests you're right Burns. Interesting few weeks ahead!

The argument with enough games very rarely works with GKs. I can't think of any top club rotating their GKs regularly based on form. The only examples are when the manager gives one "main" competition to each one, and even then the CL goalkeeper sees himself as the backup.

That being said, I don't care much if both are happy next year, as long as the best one is. And he probably will be.

Yeah. Really can't recall any clubs having 2 equally good keeper for more than 1 season. Which is why Citeh has very inferior keepers to Ederson.

Chances are whoever winning the spot will cause the other to leave next year and the odds is against Ramsdale now

Nah, Bravo left within a season of him being not first choice. Ter Stegen's 10 years younger as well so it was an easier dynamic.

The closest example I can think of in club football is Cech and Cudicini. Although Cudicini wasn't very ambitious so it helped.

It worked for Barcelona. They had two quality keepers alternating between the league and cups and they won the treble, even if one ended up leaving.

There's no doubt one of Ramsdale or Raya will end up leaving in the next couple of years, but it improves our GK department and that's all that matters.

Assuming that one of them does leave next summer, then I can only see that being Ramsdale. And that for me is another factor for why I don't like this deal.

Don Pacifico why? If Ramsdale leaves (and I'm not exactly sure why you're so certain it would be him losing his place, without first watching him fight for it), if Ramsdale leaves then it would mean he lost out to David Raya. And if Rayas the better keeper (by that much), it would be quite evident in our game and our results.

Might end up being the difference between us winning and losing the league.

And we aren't happy with it because...

I'd guess the player pushed hard for the move. Brentford have said he needs to extend his contract by a year which he has done.

From Brentford's point of view this time next year if he comes back they'll be in the same position they are now.

Actually just read that it's just to help us with FFP and the option just needs a few games played for it to be an obligation. Basically means no more incoming since we are struggling with ffp.
