Claudius I understood Emi’s point of view, he had sat on the bench and on loan his whole career and now was his chance but I think he just needed to show some patience. When he came into the team he was obviously fantastic but Leno had probably had been one of our best players before his injury. I remember at the time how gutted we were because Leno had been keeping us in games and we thought we were fucked. So it would have been unfair for Arteta to just dump Leno for Emi. I think if he had stayed he would have taken Leno’s place but Arteta couldn’t guarantee that.
At the time Argentina were crying out for a keeper and Emi had caught their attention so he probably thought for his international career he couldn’t take the risk.
