Interesting listening to Raya after the match last night, talking about the need to stay focused all game long and the mental fatigue afterwards. Says his trick to stay focused is to never shut up and be continually talking to the defence, organising them non-stop.

He was awesome for the penalties, fuck me how long has it been since we had a keeper who actually saves penalties! Since Jens seems like when it comes to penalties our keepers seem to get worse and worse! What really impressed me was you could sense the defence was nervy, Saliba looked off as well. But throughout Raya was calm and composed and made sure he dominated his box. Outstanding performance from him.

Loved his mentality after the game, saying he should have saved three of them and the GK coach will probably moan to him. Sums the club up right now, keep our standard high.

Unfortunately for Ramsdale this past week and probably extinguished any hope he had of getting back into the team.

Yeah loved that. He wasn't even asked about that, but straight away said he should have saved 3. Looks like we did our home work on their penalty takers which is why we were also playing for penalties, being confident we will win it.

He sounds very calm, composed in interview and extremely confident. The way he said "both"without any hesitation when Titi asked him speaks volume.

JazzG Both City and Liverpool has their no 1 keeper missing and their number 2 are doing very well. Both are in my opinion at the same level as Ramsdale. Don't think Ramsdale has to leave.

and even if you're forced to pick one, doing something the club has never done before has to be the answer. arsenal winning the champions league is a much bigger deal than the 14th league title. so saka got it wrong on both counts. he didn't say both and then said the premier league.

Rice is still a better captain and leader but just hasn’t been here long enough. Rice has potential to be Mr Arsenal aka new Tony Adams.

Ode is good too but don’t forget went missing last season in crucial moments ie Man City away.

He also sometimes has random games he plays like shit/goes missing.

Rice is a 7/8 every game and you know what you are getting with him. He is better captain material but Ode has been very good and consistent in 2024 so I’m happy with him.

So the last two matches have sealed Ramsdale's departure and made the Raya doubters feel far more complaisant.

I've got plenty of sympathy for Ramsdale. It's been a weird situation for him, and given a few phone calls missed last summer he'd likely have looked the goods for us this season.

But it'll also be relaxing to put this "two #1s" debate to bed and talk about our goalkeeping performances independent of it.

You mention Odegaard going missing against City (hardly unusual) but he’s been the lynchpin for why we’re competing with City in the first place. Odegaard’s pretty much Arteta’s voice on the pitch and that’s what will keep him captain

Odegaard doesn't go missing. Sometimes he doesn't get an assist or goal, maybe thats what you mean but he's never missing. He's always working hard, leading the press, getting on the ball, making the biggest passing contribution in the team.

His last min winners or goals at crucial moments is also captain martial. He’s like our Steven Gerrard in a way but obviously play a bit deeper.

Ode is great and have nothing against him. Yesterday he rose in my estimation. I love when players show up in big games like they have arrived.

I was one of the few pro -Ode ppl on here when he first came on loan. The best individual Arsenal performance in the last 15 years is still Ode v West Ham away in 2021.

We are lucky to have them both.

Being English wasn't meant to be pejorative but rather a shorthand for what you've just said in the remaining part of your post. The Stevie G approach to captaincy is fine and he was undoubtedly a great captain but also skews heavily towards mythologising 'moments'.

It seems odd to fixate on moments or specific games when the whole renaissance we're seeing is as a club is partly down to a more focused and serious dressing room on and off the pitch of which Odegaard's been the captain of.

I'm not disagreeing that Rice would be a good captain btw but rather highlighting what a good captain looks like

Sicario2 - Tier 1 Rice was pretty mid last night and has been in plenty of games. He's a quality addition overall but this idea his immune to bad games is bollox.
